Does it means that Singaporeans need to go on riot so that we can achieve better living conditions for ourselves?

A substantial number of dormitories will be built to better house foreign workers

SINGAPORE — In the midst of a temporary alcohol ban in Little India, the Government is also taking steps to improve the welfare of foreign workers.

Speaking to reporters in Tokyo at the end of the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit today, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said a substantial number of dormitories will be built over the next two to three years to better house foreign workers.

Even as authorities tighten the inflow of foreign workers over the years, Mr Lee said their population needs to be managed, and there is an on-going inter-ministerial committee that looks into their welfare.

“One of the focuses was to try our best to see how we could speed up the construction of more dorms, so that the workers who are now housed in HDB estate or private properties, which have been rented out, they can be put in proper dorms,” said Mr Lee. “Then I think they can be better taken care of and there can be less impact on the community.”

Mr Lee added there is also no evidence to show that the riot was caused by the lack of support for foreign workers.

He said: “We believe that foreign workers in Singapore ought to be treated fairly and properly. We do not stand for ill treatment or unfair treatment of foreign workers. We have to make sure they are well treated, they are paid properly on time, their safety is taken care of, their living conditions are up to standard, and they are given full protection of the law.”

Mr Lee also addressed concerns raised by businesses affected by the alcohol ban this weekend.

He said: “We don’t want anything to go wrong this week. So to make absolutely sure, we have a ban which covers quite a big area. And we said just no alcohol this week, and just calm down, cool down, and make sure things are back to normal.

“After that, we can calibrate and establish new rules. It would take some time to make out what the final rules will be, but I think we should have interim rules after this week. There is a downside to that timeout so everybody feels that and the timeout cannot last forever.”

The ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol covers 1.1 square kilometres in the Serangoon Road area — the scene of the riot on Dec 8. CHANNEL NEWSASIA

No, it means the Population White Paper will be fast-tracked. ;)

Headline should read "govt masks shortage of dormitories behind even more lies"

I remember how some people living in the Serangoon area was unhappy when the PAP approved dormitories in their area. Did the PAP lose any votes over this:confused:
This was a few years ago before the indian riots of 2013

Now that there is a potential for problems like riots, this is going to become a political issue for the PAP.

Private soundproofed rooms for hot sweaty dorm sex with their Pinoy girlfriends. ;)

Yesterday I was at a certain suburb mall (not saying which one) and some police officers chased away some Ah Neh-Pinay couples who were cuddling and kissing at the smoking area outside of the mall. Obviously, the fear of another riot happening lingers on.

Sinkees need to go on a riot to protest the foreign invasion of our community. Look at your neighbourhood, how many Ah Nehs and Ah Tiongs have taken over? It is a matter of time before we see HDB blocks with Ah Nehs being the majority and sinkees the minority.

Foreign invasion has started a decade ago.
Pressure for various reasons has led to foreign riot.
I believe before we reached 6.9mil, I should have witness more riots, whether by Singaporeans or foreigners.
Next in line maybe between different sections of foreign workers, if different nationalities of workers are housed within a dormitory.

Already happening. The PRC bus drivers were unhappy that they were not getting the same deal as the Sporean drivers.

LHL is the saviour of the Singaporean people, after bringing in millions of foreigners under his watch. It takes a riot to make him realise there are insufficient dormitories available. Well done PAP, you deserve an ice cream.

Treat the nehs as third class residents and they behave like one. Did they expect otherwise?

Too many foreign workers here. Just too many. Time to cut down the numbers.

jurong point?

Companies are supposed to take care of their own workers right? So why is the garment building dorms for them using tax payers' money?

Siapa baiyar? Who will pay for all these dorms? Employers? Workers' levies? Or tax payers?

Definitely not from the pockets of Denise Phua or big-mouthed Vikram Nair?

Exactly my point.
Bus driver strike, increase pay.

first the alcohol ban, now is the housing to "improve the welfare". seems to be that they are rather afraid of the incident happening once more. but let's all hope it serves to quell the angst in the workers for now

As usual all those unhappy Sillyporeans living in Serangoon area has been bought over by the "$$$ Package" just before
announcement of election day. They only concern about short term gains and choose to ignore long term issues.
