A CHINESE national, who studied in Singapore on a Ministry of Education (MOE) scholarship, was fined $48,000 yesterday for having pirated copies of movies for sale.
Sales manager Guan Zhenbang, 24, had pleaded guilty to four charges of having infringing articles belonging to Universal City Studios, Sony Pictures Releasing International Corporation and Paramount Pictures Corporation.
The court heard that he had pursued an electrical and electronics course, and further tertiary studies, on an MOE scholarship. He was to have worked in Singapore for several years after graduation.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nicholas Ngoh said he started selling media players and hard disks last year, employing workers to help him man his business in Sim Lim Square.
As he was a student and a foreigner, he had asked a friend to be registered as a director of the company, Sunjack Tech, at Sim Lim Square.
He was the only shareholder and ran the business solely.
A blank hard disk was sold for $150 while a hard disk uploaded with movies cost $200 to $220.
He personally transferred the movies, such as The Bourne Identity, Quantum Of Solace and Shrek, onto the hard disks.
The police raided the shop and mobile kiosks on April 23, seizing more than 300 media players.
Eight other similar charges were taken into consideration.
He could have been fined up to $10,000 per article and/or jailed for up to five years.
