Chinese experts said Wednesday China's Tianhe-1A supercomputer, the world's fastest supercomputer, is a milestone for China's supercomputer industry.

The experts made the statement at a press conference in Tianjin after the supercomputer was recognized at a supercomputer industry conference in New Orleans, the United States, Tuesday.

Jack Dongarra, compiler of the World Top 500 Supercomputers list and a professor at the University of Tennessee, gave a certificate to Liu Guangming, director of China's Tianjin-based National Supercomputer Center, at the conference.

Tianhe-1A, which can perform 2.57 quadrillion computing operations per second, topped the 36th edition of the list, the first time a Chinese supercomputer has taken the honor, said Tianhe-1A's project manager Li Nan.

"Tianhe-1A will help solve difficult problems, and foreign clients are welcome to make use of its capabilities," Li said.

Zhu Xijin, deputy director of the Science and Technology Committee of the Binhai New Area, Tianjin Municipality, said Tianhe-1A has been successfully used to survey mines, forecast weather and design high-end machinery.

Still, Li said there is still a large gap between China and developed countries in terms of information technology.

According to the newly released list, more than 270 of the world's supercomputers are in the United States while over 120 are in Europe. Only 41 are in China. More than 77 percent of the powerful machines were developed by the U.S. companies IBM, HP and CRAY.

The NERSC Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and researchers at universities in Tennessee and Mannheim, Germany, publish the list biennially.
