Migration is a very individual choice. A place that is suitable for a person may not be suitable for another.
Just consider the various good/bad comments about Kiwis returning to NZ from www.stuff.co.nz

We wouldn't dream of it. Less concerned about job/salary prospects. It's the random crime, the intimidation everywhere; the dirty streets and towns; vandalism and graffiti everywhere; the slovenly, thuggish 'locals' stalking the country everywhere you look; the bland, depressing, abject 'yuckiness' (for want of a better word!) of Auckland. And the negative, insular, ignorant (often rude) mentality of so many kiwis is ridiculous. God it is a depressing place to visit these days! And the weather doesn't help it! Quality of life? Hardly. (Example: you've all read recently about how poorly raised/treated/cared for N.Z. kids are compared with the rest of the developed world...) Amazing what we used to think was 'normal' when we lived there. Glad to be done with it. Clean up the place big-time, and you might tempt a few back. Not us, but a few others.

As a returned expat I would like to respond to the ignormanus from california who obviously has a deluded image of this country and appears only to have evey lived in one place. That being Auckland ,and by the sounds a rough part. Every country has them! I have travelled the world and lived in london for 3 years. If Mr "never again" thinks NZ is full of randomn crime and dirty streets then he/they have never lived in London, Rio or Detroit. Wake up buddy. NZ is a beautiful country and it may have its share of social problems but lets get real and acknowledge they are no where near as bad as some countrys and cities (not to mention south central LA). New Zeland is undergoing market correction in respect of housing which is well due. But if you dont want to come back then thats great. We dont want you.

I am late twenties & have travelled around a lot of the world. I love NZ. Yes, incomes are lower here than other developed nations... but there is life beyond money. My happiness comes from spending time with family & friends, fishing, diving and exploring the wonderful country we have. I can't believe all your negative comments above, they seem rather shallow... and in fact, the country could possibly be better off without you returning.

My wife and I are returning home after 5/7 years away. We are looking forward to getting in the car, going to the beach, skiing, fishing, being with family and friends. There is a lot in NZ if it suits you, but if money/wealth is what your life's about then probably not. NZ's small town attitude and seeking world importance will change in time if enough of us go back. I'm looking forward to it.
