The recently released report and recommendation on healthcare is readily welcomed because it is indeed an improvement from the past approach not by a milestone but an improvement nevertheless. An improvement grudgingly given or else the the ballot box will do the talking. In essence a gun held to the head of the Government.

Secondly, the policy of obfuscation continues. Instead of using the countries noted for providing the best possible universal healthcare to allow an apple to apple comparison, they selectively picked the Swiss Model. At best the approach is ineffective and at worst deceitful and dishonest. A first year University student who presents a paper with this kind of comparative analysis will immediately fail. Why not pick Malaysia just for comparison on how much a 65 yr uncle has to fork for a heartache in total cost.

Thirdly using an American expatriate who draws his remuneration indirectly from this government to provide an informed view of Obamacare is no different to asking a captive how he values his master in front of his master. Surely this is deceitful and dishonest conduct. The CPF did a similar study some years ago using the US Social Security programme and they picked the worst example in the 1st world.

Fourthly the comments peppered all around the report from feedback received in focus groups made of ordinary citizens and in wider stakeholder engagement were obvious or motherhood statements. More is of course better. Bear in mind the same and identical approach in receiving feedback and to prove that stakeholder engagement had taken place was done for the Population White Paper and it blew in their face spectacularly in their face and caught the establishment by complete surprise. So how did the mechanism fail so badly. Who were the idiots they engaged - PAP members and friends of the establishment. I recall NMP Dr Pauline Straughan, a lecturer in Sociology who endorsed the paper in the consultative stage hid under the desk when it exploded. And she is supposed to be qualified in this field.

Fifthly continuous and repeated mention of govt subsidies in its various forms never actually addresses why the actual total cost is so high. This is despite employing 3rd world nurses, 3rd world doctors and not actually operating in a 1st world cost environment. Is this another cost of HDB flat actual value that will never be released, explained or has no foundation to reality. So the starting point is flawed for any further proper assessment to be carried out.

Sixthly who the hell are the members of the committee for such an important body of to be carried out. I went thru their profile and the word underwhelming would be an understatement. They even have a property agent. Might as well include a used car salesman to complete the picture.

PAP, you need to stop this deceitful habit of cherry picking arguments and examples to suit your needs. Open that proverbial kimono and lay out all the facts. If the country decides that we have to raise taxes to look after needy and the incapable in our society, so be it. Please don't come to the table without first breaking down the cost components as the starting point and be ready to be transparent.

Hate to repeat ad nauseam but our world class universities are surprisingly quiet on this.

The learned men in public admin, sociology, political science, economics ect2 seems to have little to say on such an important matter-do they expect the men in the street to do a comparative studies of healthcare financing or maybe leave it to another Roy or Toa Payoh 5 to express their opinions?

Are universities ranked based on articles/research that academics in their ivory tower write for each other to read without any impact on society at large?

Like all scams, half-truths, lies and Central Ponzi Fund (CPF) time will unravel them.

Those at the wet market and coffee shop will say, if shit can be eaten than
you can trust the Pappies.

The irony is that the academia in Singapore led by Kishore Mahbunani is training hundreds and hundreds of 3 rd world countries on public policy as they claim to have leadership and experience in this field. Yet we restrict, we prohibit and stop any academic research in this field by creating and maintaining a climate of fear.

They have shackled so many in the past, such as Mutalib, Bilveer etc by threats and Chan Heng Chee and Tommy Koh by offering carrots that nothing will go forward. The last incident is when one Ng Eng Hen crucified 2 NTU lecturers. One of them to make up has gone to the other end of spectrum that he has become more PAP than PAP. Ng Kok Lim repeatedly destroys his work and this guy has no shame.

If we cannot learn from history and we cannot accept honest feedback, then society starts to make wild allegations to draw attention to a just cause as Roy's case highlights.

To compound the issue we have a PM who rather be in New York to sing praises about his wife and her work rather than be home and release what must be a very important policy matter in recent years. It shows the lack of interest and sincerity in dealing with the locals.

A political leadership which die die never wants to admit when it has been wrong, and which is too proud to say sorry, and take humble pie advice..obfuscation and covering up are defensive mechanisms. There's too much self-conceit in thinking that they are the best thought leaders, but history is strewn with examples of short-sightedness, lack of vision, loss of touch with the ground and electorate, and simply worshipping and sacrificing citizens at the altar of the corporatism greed god.

Why is medical costs going up since we have 3rd world workforce in our frontline and not so 1st world infra stature ?? Have u seen how much our specialist consultants draw nowadays?? A lot of 'Susan Lim's around!!

The medical lobby is the most powerful all thru the years. Imagine they were so powerful that in the 90s, the Govt actually barred registration of trained doctors from some of the world's best universities. Now we see doctors from 3rd world basket cases such as the Philippines.

Remember former MP and doctor Michael Lim recently showcasing his multi-million Palace that he built.

When I first began to read the report, I was getting excited and then I saw the cost and subsidies and despite all that, the patient still has to cough up $2K plus for class B2. I thought I was read it wrong. Then I saw Leong Sze Hian's article where they highlighted the good parts and hid the worst part, This was followed by the Minister of Health proudly saying no increases for 5 years and then failing to say that it jumps by more than 100%. Now that is a clear case of deceitful and dishonest behaviour.

These guys are not different to BMW peddling ballon payment loans.

Jokes aside, I appreciate it's a delicate balancing act. A lot of 'High net worth' got millions in medical insurance and naturally they want only the 'best'. At the same time they got to keep medical costs affordable for the masses. And medical tourism is a flourishing business. And Singapore is small to have a really two tier system.
