MDA cowed down due to pressure: Definition of website

Re: Yaacob: We will only target websites which get their FACTS wrong

Yet, a lot of ignorant Singaporeans will turn a blind eye to this, because it does not affect their "bread and butter".

I, too, will turn a blind eye to this. "Bread and butter" issues are more important.

That's why the opposition should focus on the increasing costs of living, creaking infrastructure, etc...

Re: Yaacob: We will only target websites which get their FACTS wrong

Look at how they are trying to spin it now. I think they are caught in a bind. Yet, a lot of ignorant Singaporeans will turn a blind eye to this, because it does not affect their "bread and butter".

CPT NS think Singaporeans are dumb. Arabs were thought to be dumb. They managed to kill Westerners easily.

You're living in an Asian society not some white trash libertarian country where drugs and public sex is considered acceptable.

In an Asian society, you are taught respect for your elders and for those in positions of authority.

When you're young, you have to listen to your parents and they decide what is good for you.

When you go to school, you have to listen to your teachers and obey them.

When you're an adult member of society, you now have to obey your leaders and accept their superior wisdom. That is the purpose of leadership.

However, if you think that your leaders are lacking in any manner or form, you are perfectly entitled to follow due process in order to become a leader yourself. You can then make decisions for others.

Democracy does not mean that you can do what you like. It simply means that leadership is decided by an electoral process where all citizens have a vote.

What you have posted largely points to a kind of social behaviour that is largely fading in modern day society. And this fading of social values is exactly what pappies might call "growth and productivity".

Being filial to one's parents is a largely Asian value, being passed down from generations.. but here.. there is a LAW that penalises people who DO NOT look after their parents. That has nothing to do with a democracy.. which is the way a country is governed.

Showing respect to your leaders is also an old traditional passe'.. crumbled once we advance and become globally connected and bringing in more foreigners and accepting and adopting "advanced models of thought and progress" to supposedly make things more efficient.

Being a more democratic society and a more democratic country doesn't mean that the old ways are lost, or kept. IMHO, that is up to the people to decide.. not for the govt. to try to "control" or "tamper" with. If people feel that certain things should be kept and passed on to later generations.. then why not?

The problem here is not traditional values but of the SINGLE RIGHT one has of being able to decide for themselves, what they can read, view, listen to on the internet.. without obstruction, and without intervention.

If you were to say that minor below a certain age, let's say 16, should be kept at bay of certain content.. then I am most inclined to agree with you.

However, this licensing thingy is targeted at EVERYONE.. regardless of age, language or religion.. it hits ALL!!

Whether you are 21, 35 or 50, you will be affected, as this licensing thing will do it's best to make ALL CONTENT be the "right thing" that you can have access to. The question is, when will they go overboard or go crazy?

The saying goes, "power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.". If you allow someone to start to bully you and take things away from you and you don't do anything.. you are indirectly encouraging that someone to continue to pick on you.. and in time, take even more away from you, as they get more brazen and embolden in their ways.

If this licensing thing is allowed to stay, who knows what else will come next? Do we want that to happen?

Prevention is better than cure. So, we should heed this saying, and prevent things from happening, rather than fixing things when they go bad, no??

In other words, don't complain.......if you want to complain........then you come and do lor:mad:

...............
However, if you think that your leaders are lacking in any manner or form, you are perfectly entitled to follow due process in order to become a leader yourself. You can then make decisions for others.

Re: Yaacob: We will only target websites which get their FACTS wrong

Also btw we tell U what is Fact and what is Fiction!
Let's see the kind of FACT that Yaacob is referring to: if a person is within the polling station, he is not considered to be within 200m radius of the polling station.

Re: Yaacob: We will only target websites which get their FACTS wrong

This is really 越描越黑.
Wonder where it will all end?

Yaacob's "light touch" approach to regulating the Internet

Yahoo! says new rules to pave way for accreditation

AFP June 5, 2013, 10:04 pm

SINGAPORE (AFP) - Yahoo! Singapore said Wednesday that new rules requiring the licensing of online news sites will help pave the way for it to get full media accreditation.

Singapore's official media watchdog late last month announced annual licensing rules for news websites, including the local Yahoo! portal, that will subject them to the same regulations as traditional media.

The move has angered the city-state's feisty online community. Local bloggers said they would stage an "Internet blackout" on Thursday and a rally on Saturday to protest at what they call a blow against free speech.

Yahoo! Singapore said accreditation would allow its reporters to get government media credentials and give them access to more official events.

While the site has a team of reporters producing independent coverage, its journalists are not issued government press cards.

"In the past few years, we were restricted from government and other authoritative sources because we were not seen to be an accredited media -- that was a realm of newspapers and broadcasters," said Alan Soon, Yahoo! country manager for Singapore.

"The licensing changes will help pave the way for full accreditation and access for our reporters. We will be a stronger editorial team and our stories will improve because of that," added Soon, who is also Yahoo! managing editor for Southeast Asia.

The network serves a million unique users in Singapore each day, he said in a statement.

Soon said it was important that "regulations and guidelines remain meaningful and do not become a tool that restricts freedom of expression and genuine debate".

Yahoo! has gained popularity as an alternative news and opinion source in Singapore, where the mainstream media is widely seen as pro-government.

Minister for Commmunications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim said Tuesday that despite the licensing move, the government would continue to take a "light touch" approach to regulating the Internet.

Interesting that MDA is cowing down due to public pressure.

Definition of website: A location on the World Wide Web with content supplied and maintained by a single person or organization (Chamber Dictionary).

Today, Yaacob said "The new rules also do not apply to blog sites or online commentaries."

Blog sites and online commentaries are considered as websites (on the WWW, eg. www.blogspot.com, etc.)
Don't for one second think that online community has won.

After the storm dies down, the white scums will simply say that their definition of blogs and online commentaries has "evolved", and all will now be under the new rules too.

Re: Yaacob: We will only target websites which get their FACTS wrong

Also btw we tell U what is Fact and what is Fiction!

The Fact is that our press media, their term and rule of engagement is world class that no foreign media will meddle.

Being placed at 149th on World press Freedom index, that is Fiction

Re: Yaacob: We will only target websites which get their FACTS wrong

Re: Yaacob: We will only target websites which get their FACTS wrong

Yaacob 'once-in-fifty-years' Ibrahim can take a place at Aljunied GRC :D:D:D

Yeah. After Zainul Abidin, that place needs another token Malay face from the PAP. ;)

Re: Yaacob: We will only target websites which get their FACTS wrong

She is paid a million or so, and she does not even have the basic communications skills to clear the air?

Yakult must have been taken out because of his stupidity as exhibited on BBC.

Not that Overtime Tan was any better - either he got the short end of the draw in the lucky draw, he's targetted to be sacked/hung out to dry or he volunteered so that he can demonstrate his ability to think on his feet. This is the fella who got to where he was in the army by screaming YES SIR and HOW HIGH, SIR everytime he was told to jump during his army daze. All he did was to dance around the questions, treating the panelists like idiots and the viewers as clowns.

All these ministers are at this level of dumb-and-dumber mode because they have been treated with silk gloves by SPH. Yakult distributed a 22-point Q&A document to the press during his press 'conference'. THAT is the quality of our multi-million dollar ministers - mere petition writers in their MP roles and mouth pieces for their Master's Voice on the bigger stage.

She needs to be paid higher to inspire her to greater capabilities, such has handling public queries.

TCJ is obviously usually given tough jobs that can't score any points so that LHL can thumb him down and elevate the Leegime favorite boy, kee Chiu and Heng swee keat.

Note that TCJ got manpower portfolio, a sure die role, and now to fight the MDA fire on tv. This type of suicide mission got no chance of coming out unscathed. Sure get his lanjiao limbs blown off and will be a publicly hated figure by next GE.

OTOH, kee Chiu looks so lovable doling out social welfare measures. How to lose point so long as he doesn't do another stunt like Vivian a few years back.

Ah Heng also look sweet with education portfolio. Don't rock the boat and he will be like the best new minister in next GE.
