A Muslim businessman has opened Britain’s first ‘halal sex shop’ selling dildos and lube which he claims is permissible by Islamic law.

The site went live this month and offers products including a ’50 Shades of Grey Submit to Me bondage kit’ although, for the moment, all of the stock is labelled ‘coming soon’.

Hamed Zeb, aged 29, told the Western Daily Press that Muslims are just as sexually adventurous as anyone else but may not feel comfortable using traditional adult shops as they often have a pornographic focus and don’t promote marriage.

In his store, he plans to sell gelatin-free lubes (gelatin is haram [forbidden] because it is made from pigs) and vibrators from the online store, with a view to opening one on the high street in the future. The entrepreneur, from Nottingham, claimed his products and selling techniques were not blasphemous and said he was careful to avoid immodest images of women to advertise his stock.

‘The provocative image of a place like Ann Summers embarrasses Muslims with explicit pornography and suggestiveness meaning they’re much less likely to go,’ he said. ‘I wanted Muslim people to benefit from an adult shop to intensify their love lives and prolong their marriages. The UK Muslim community needs to break a taboo subject such as sex – it should be open and celebrated rather than ignored or swept under the carpet whenever it is mentioned.’
But not everyone supports the idea.

El Asira, a shop selling erotic massage oils and lube which also claims to be shariah compliant, says on its website:

‘Halal tends to be misused, and applied to products that make no sense whatsoever.

‘Sex in Islam is restricted to marriage, there is no sexual conception outside of that bond.’​
