Coming to your estate soon: Cops on bicycles
Cops in shorts and casual polo T-shirts zipping around on mountain bikes will soon be a common sight in neighbourhoods all over Singapore.
There will also be closed-circuit television cameras at key entry and exit points of Housing Board (HDB) blocks and multi-storey carparks by 2016, to give the police more eyes on the ground.
These are just two of a string of initiatives that the men and women in blue are rolling out, as part of a major operational revamp to embrace a new community policing model.
Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean told Parliament on Thursday that changes in Singapore's demographic profile, attitudes and community needs mean the police must adjust their strategy.
Bonding with the community
BICYCLE and foot patrols will be back in a big way as the police revamp their approach to community policing.
A new crime strike force will be set up at every Neigbourhood Police Centre and it will be staffed with officers who will develop closer ties within the local community.
The current community liaison and preparedness team at the centres will also be beefed up and renamed as Community Policing units.
Officers in the unit will be assigned to specific beats, and will conduct foot and bicycle patrols.
The reorganisation of the centres will kick off in May and is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.
