Most happy this morning when I received an update that slightly more than 50% of our population have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. About 36% have received two doses. Let’s all push it up further.
Yesterday at the Multi-Ministry Taskforce press conference, I shared that there is increasing consensus among experts that COVID-19 will likely be endemic.
What’s endemic? Means the virus will continue to mutate and circulate in the community, like Influenza, and we must adapt to this and live with it, while keeping ourselves safe.
Fortunately, we have built up our capabilities over the past year. We can now test, contact trace and isolate very quickly. We have also vaccinated a good part of our population.
With these defences in place, I believe we are able to put the circuit breaker as a response behind us, and able to keep most businesses open, carry on with our daily lives.
But to go further, to help keep F&B and gyms open, and even resume travel, our vaccination rate has to be higher. We can then be better protected, even if the virus is circulating in the community.
We are vaccinating as fast as we can but we are constrained by supplies, due to the high global demand. We will do our best to confirm the delivery of more vaccine to open up more slots, as early as possible.
So when it is your turn to go for the jab, please do so, and encourage your friends or family members to do likewise.

Is OYK more humble than Lee Kwan Yew?

It is hard to say who is more humble, but below is a very touching facebook post from OYK.

Our two daughters did a lovely video of their growing up years, which featured a young looking papa and mummy.
This is one of the screen captures, of a video clip taken 20 years ago.
20 years later, a father’s heart for his daughters hasn’t changed. Today, both are young women trying to navigate their way through adulting.
Step aside PSLE, O/A Levels exams, university finals, job interviews, general elections etc - fatherhood for me is still the biggest learning journey of my life.
Today, my daughters are teaching me new perspectives of their generation, their own struggles and questions in life that they will eventually have to figure out.
They don’t need me to watch over them anymore. But to just hold their hands gently, as they walk into the vast unknown.
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads!

So good to see the many happy faces of our newly-minted pharmacists last Friday, as they marked the start of their professional journey by reciting the Pharmacist’s Pledge.
The Pharmacist’s Pledge, like many other professional promises, such as the Hippocratic Oath, the SAF Pledge, or the Oath I took when being appointed a Minister, is a solemn commitment to our responsibilities. For these pharmacists, it is a promise of their care, professionalism and dedication to their patients, and to the pharmacy profession.
To our newly registered pharmacists – your pledge signifies a lifelong commitment to your patients. A warmest welcome to our healthcare family and wishing all a meaningful and fulfilling career ahead.

More than half of S'pore population have received first dose of Covid-19 vaccine: Ong Ye Kung

About 36 per cent have received the complete regimen of two doses.

SINGAPORE - More than half the population in Singapore have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccines, said Health Minister Ong Ye Kung on Saturday (June 19), cheering the progress of the vaccination drive.
About 36 per cent have received the complete regimen of two doses.
The Ministry of Health said that it had administered more than 4.8 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine as at Friday.

More than 2.8 million people have received at least the first dose of the vaccine. Of this group, about two million people have completed the full vaccination regimen of two doses.
Singapore's vaccine roll-out was ramped up in recent weeks as part of the strategy to prepare for the new normal with Covid-19 as an endemic disease. The accelerated national vaccination programme prioritises first-dose vaccinations, so that more people have at least some protection from the coronavirus.
Posting the latest figures on Facebook, Mr Ong said: "Let's all push it up further."

He added: "We are vaccinating as fast as we can but we are constrained by supplies due to the high global demand. We will do our best to confirm the delivery of more vaccine to open up more slots as early as possible.
"So when it is your turn to go for the jab, please do so, and encourage your friends or family members to do likewise."
Mr Ong had said at a press conference on Friday that there is increasing consensus among international experts that Covid-19 will become endemic.
This means that the virus will continue to mutate and circulate, like the influenza virus, and people will have to adapt and learn to live with it.
Reiterating this in his post, he added that Singapore had built up its capabilities over the past year to test, contact trace and isolate those who have Covid-19 very quickly, and has also vaccinated "a good part" of its population.
"With these defences in place, I believe we are able to put the circuit breaker as a response behind us, and able to keep most businesses open, carry on with our daily lives," he said.
"But to go further, to help keep F&B (food and beverage establishments) and gyms open, and even resume travel, our vaccination rate has to be higher. We can then be better protected, even if the virus is circulating in the community."

Singapore had put in heightened measures in May to curb the spread of the virus and bring down a spike in cases after clusters emerged in Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Changi Airport.
The restrictions have been progressively relaxed over the past weeks. On Friday, the multi-ministry task force tackling Covid-19, which Mr Ong co-chairs, announced further easing, such as allowing people to dine out in pairs from Monday (June 21).
While giving an update on Singapore's strategy against Covid-19 at the end of May, the task force, as well as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, had said that higher vaccination rates will be needed for people to be able to carry on with their lives with the virus in their midst.
The plan is to work towards allowing people to go to work and meet their friends, take part in large-scale events, and eventually even go around outdoors without masks.

Pioneers will get $250-$900 (depending on their age) and Merdeka Generation seniors will get $200 credited into their MediSave accounts.
MediSave can be used to pay for MediShield Life premiums, as well as medical expenses such as hospitalisation, day surgeries and outpatient treatments for chronic conditions.
These are efforts to honour the contributions of our Pioneer and Merdeka Generation seniors, and to defray their medical expenses.
Our seniors can expect to receive their letters by the end of this month. You can also read more here: https://www.moh.gov.sg/…/pioneer-and-merdeka-generation-sen…

Singapore has signed advance purchase agreement with Novavax: Ong Ye Kung

SINGAPORE — Singapore had signed an advance purchase agreement for the Novavax vaccine in January, and is awaiting the American biotechnology company's application for regulatory approval, said Minister of Health Ong Ye Kung on Thursday (24 June).

However, Ong added that the vaccine is still undergoing phase-three clinical trials in the US, and shipment will not be ready so soon.

The vaccine, jointly developed by Novavax and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, is produced by creating an engineered baculovirus containing a gene for a modified spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

It is thus made differently from the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccines produced by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, which are the two vaccines currently used in Singapore's national vaccination programme. Separately, 24 healthcare institutions had been licensed by the Ministry of Health to provide the Sinovac vaccine to those who wish to take it.

"Recently there has been some encouraging results of Novavax clinical trials published in the papers," said Ong during a COVID-19 multi-ministry taskforce media conference on Thursday.

"We are working closely with Novavax and awaiting their application for regulatory approval. We hope the vaccine suppliers can arrive before the end of the year, for those who want to take (a vaccine) that is non-mRNA.

"In the meantime, please continue to consider mRNA vaccines, they work very well. Please consider them unless you are medically not eligible to take them, such as if you're allergic to the first dose."

OYK wants two thirds vaccination rate by National Day.

Ong Ye Kung

15 hrs·

Two-thirds of our people fully vaccinated by National Day.
This is the ambitious target that the Multi-Ministry Taskforce has set today. But we can achieve it, vaccine supplies permitting, and with everyone playing their part.
How are we going to do this?
1️⃣ We will increase our daily vaccination rate to 80,000 doses, starting this weekend.
2️⃣ We will open up 500,000 new first dose appointment slots in the next few days, starting tomorrow. If you have registered for your first dose but have yet to receive a booking link, you can expect to receive an SMS to make an appointment soon.
3️⃣ We will extend priority for Singapore Citizens aged 12 to 39 years for another week, up till 1 July.
4️⃣ We will work towards reducing the waiting time between the first and second doses back to four weeks, sometime in July/August.

Achieving a high, full vaccination rate is critical to help us re-open our economy again, and start to get our normal lives back.

Then we will be able to put F&B and gym closures behind us, have bigger events and wedding receptions, and overseas travel without Stay-Home Notice and quarantine.

We are at a critical stage of our national vaccination programme. Do help spread the message – get vaccinated and protect not just yourself and your loved ones, but the community as well.
