Man sets fire to rush-hour bus ‘after being sacked for stealing’

A Chinese man allegedly set fire to a bus during this morning’s rush hour – moments after reportedly starting a blaze at the company that had fired him the day before.

Police said 10 passengers were hurt after the fire broke out in the middle section of the Number 656 bus in Xiamen, Fujian province, at about 8am.

Two passers-by also suffered knife wounds after the suspect allegedly slashed at them with a knife as he left the bus.

One of the injured bus passengers reportedly suffered burns.

All of the injured were taken to a local hospital.

A suspect in the case was detained at the scene, mainland media reported.

Police said the fire broke out at the middle section of thee No.656 bus during the peak commuting hour.

The Sina Weibo account of Chonggqing Morning News reported that the alleged suspect, 53, who had the surname of Cai, had recently been fired from his job at a food company. He had reportedly been accused of stealing from his employer.

The man allegedly started the fire at the company right before setting fire to the bus, media reported.

Police are now investigating the case.
