A 64-year-old man who was arrested for mischief by fire after a fire broke out at a Kovan apartment unit on Mar. 2, 2026, had allegedly argued with his wife before the fire, Shin Min Daily News reported.
Shin Min understands that the man then allegedly began burning clothes in a room, which eventually grew into a bigger fire.
In response to queries from Mothership, the police said they were alerted to the fire at 22 Sirat Road at about 4pm on Mar. 2.
The address corresponds with that of Vina Lodge, a freehold apartment development.
A neighbour living in a unit opposite the one that was on fire told Shin Min that he was working from home on the day of the incident when he suddenly experienced a power outage.
Upon leaving his house, he evacuated downstairs when he saw thick smoke billowing and heard someone shouting "fire".
Another neighbour, who is 63, told Shin Minthat the man's wife is also in her 60s.
The neighbour, Huang (transliterated), added that the couple moved into their residence around three years ago, and he would occasionally see their children.
Shin Min reported that when Huang approached the man, he apologised to Huang before leaving with the police.
According to Shin Min, there were over 20 residents who evacuated due to the fire.
Responding to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said three occupants of the affected unit evacuated before firefighters arrived.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a bedroom in a third-floor unit on fire and extinguished the blaze with a water jet.
A firefighter sustained a minor burn injury during the operation, SCDF said.
An SCDF paramedic assessed him, and he was later taken to Singapore General Hospital.
A TikTok video of the fire showed thick smoke billowing into the sky as flames engulfed a window.
