In a tale reminiscent of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, a Chinese man returned home to find someone had broken into his home and been drinking his bayberry liquor and was STILL sleeping in his bed, mainland media reports.

Police in the city of Hangzhou in Zhejiang province, arrested a suspect in the case, who did not wake up until an hour after being taken into custody, the news website Hangzhou.com .cn reported on Tuesday.

A homeowner, named as Chen in the report, returned home to find his door lock smashed, the door wide open and a man fast asleep in his upstairs bedroom,

The suspect reportedly had a red face and smelt strongly of alcohol, the website said.

Chen called the police, who arrested the suspect while he remained still fast asleep.

The alleged burglar, named in the report as Xiao, finally woke up in custody more than an hour after his arrest.

Xiao reportedly told police had also broken into Chen’s home three days before.

He had been tempted to return because he had enjoyed drinking the Chinese bayberry liquor, or shaojiu, which he had found three days earlier after breaking into Chen’s home.

The report said Xiao, who was a migrant worker in the city, had been unable to resist drinking more of the liquor. He allegedly broke in again and then fell asleep on the bed after drinking the liquor and watching television.

The report said nothing, apart from the shaojiu, was taken from Chen’s home.
