A man who has been on the run for nine years was charged on Wednesday with the murder of a polytechnic student in Chinatown while being part of an unlawful assembly.

Larry Lim Liang Long's lawyer, Mr Peter Fernando, told a district court that his client had surrendered himself at Woodlands checkpoint on Tuesday afternoon.

The 32-year-old is accused of being with four others when one or more of them caused the death of Mr Wong Dao Jing, 18, at the staircase landing between the second and third level of Lucky Chinatown shopping mall on Feb 15, 2003.

The student was set upon after he denied stealing a haversack belonging to one of the members of the group, Toh Chun Siong.
