A man was shot by police while he allegedly was attacking passengers in the railway station in Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, and was killed, local railway police said.

It occurred at around 6am when the suspect carried bricks and rushed to smash people who were buying tickets in the station hall, police said.

Police rushed to the scene, and ordered him to stop. But he ignored the warning, causing police to shoot at him. He died at hospital after emergency treatment, police said.

The railway station has resumed operation, police said.
