At 10.46pm that day, a member of the public alerted the police to a man loitering and behaving suspiciously at an open carpark at Bukit Batok West Avenue 6. Officers from the Jurong Police Division approached the suspect and found a bunch of keys, a cash card, and a mobile phone on him. Preliminary investigations revealed that he had tried to open the door of a parked motor van using the bunch of key.

Man arrested for attempted theft from vehicle

Police have arrested a 44-year-old man for attempting to break into a vehicle to commit theft at Bukit Batok West Avenue 6.

On 16 February 2014 at about 10.46pm, Police was informed of a man loitering and behaving suspiciously at an open carpark at Bukit Batok West Avenue 6.

Officers from Jurong Police Division responded swiftly to the scene and spotted the suspect. The officers approached the suspect and interviewed him. Upon conducting a check on him, he was found in possession of a bunch of keys, a cash card, and a mobile phone. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect had tried to open the door of a parked motor van using the bunch of keys. The suspect was arrested for attempted theft from vehicle and fraudulent possession of property.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 18 February 2014 for the offence of Attempted Theft under Section 379 read with Section 511 of the Penal Code (Chapter 224). The offence is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 3 years and a fine. A court order will be sought to remand the suspect for further investigations to establish whether he was involved in other similar cases.

Commander of Jurong Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Wilson Lim, thanked the member of public for alerting Police promptly of the case and the officers for their quick response which led to the arrest of the suspect. He reminded vehicle owners to avoid leaving valuables in their vehicles and to keep their vehicles properly secured.
