Man, 38, seen dancing & opening taxi doors at Geylang Serai Market arrested for public nuisance​

A man was seen helping shoppers enter and load up into taxis at the Geylang Serai Market taxi stand — while dancing animatedly throughout.

In response to Mothership's queries, the police said they received a call for assistance at 1 Geylang Serai at about 11:10am on Nov. 19, and arrested a 38-year-old man for public nuisance.

No injuries were reported, and police investigations are ongoing.

Doorman service​

A video of the scene was shared to the SG Road Vigilante Facebook group.

Its caption described the man as "providing doorman service" that can "rival Narajan Singh at Raffles Hotel".

In the video, the man beckoned and clapped at taxis to move forward to the demarcated drop-off point before opening the doors for passengers to get in.

A woman handed over her shopping bag and trolley to him, and he placed them into the boot of the taxi.

He also helped to support the wheelchair of an elderly person down the slope and towards the taxi.

All the while, two police officers stood by and watched him, looking "bewildered", according to the video caption.

At times, the man appeared to be speaking with some frustration to the officers.

"No crime committed"​

Many who commented on the video said the man was being helpful.

Some, claiming to have encountered the man before, said he did not do anything wrong, and appreciated him for helping them with their groceries and the elderly.

Another wrote: "No crime committed. He's helping to ease foot and road traffic congestion by his service."

According to a user, the "doorman service" has been a common sight at Geylang Serai Market over the years.

While these "doormen" do not ask for money, some people would give them tips for carrying their groceries into taxis and helping the elderly get on, the user wrote.

"They do no crime," this user added. "They don't steal or rob. So just leave them alone please. If they are not around to help, who will help our old makciks and pakciks then?"

Such self-appointed ushers who expect tips were pretty common outside restaurants and places of interest during the 1970s and 80s.
