A 23-year-old construction worker died after he got hit by a concrete slab at an MRT worksite for the upcoming Cross Island Line.

The incident occurred on May 14, at about 1:30pm at 250A Turf Club Road, the site of the upcoming Turf City station.

Incident

According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), the incident happened when an excavator was removing concrete under a concrete deck.

The worker was a banksman, who guides the movement of large vehicles or heavy machinery.

His role was to guide the excavator operator and keep a lookout to prevent others from entering the work zone.

The victim was found motionless when police arrived, and paramedics pronounced him dead on-site.

Construction

The deceased was employed by Koh Kock Leong Construction, a sub-contractor of the main contractor, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co (Singapore) - Obayashi Corporation Joint Venture.

The occupier, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co (Singapore) - Obayashi CR203 Joint Venture, was instructed to stop all excavation works at the worksite.

Condolences

LTA said it extended its condolences to the family of the deceased.

“We are working with the contractors to provide support and assistance to the family,” LTA said.

MOM said the hacking and removal of any temporary concrete section must be conducted in a controlled manner, and exclusion zones must be strictly enforced.

“While banksmen safeguard others by monitoring hazards and controlling access, they must also ensure that they do not position themselves within potential collapse zones," MOM added.

Both the MOM and the police are investigating the incident, with LTA supporting them.

Police do not suspect foul play based on their preliminary investigations.
