Malays generally prefer not to overwork themselves or push themselves too hard, those people that bluntly equate these traits as laziness are either limited in their vocabs or can't differentiate well.
Malays generally have low tolerance to hardship and they tend to surrender and give up when they encountered hardship. The trait is not the same as laziness. I do not see malays as lazy and recently corrected the wrong perception (or the wrong wording) when talking to a foreigner.
