Fasting is mentioned in the Quran. The scripture teaches good. But not all followers abide and is no fault of God too
Depends on whether fasting the correct definition. It could be self restrain or even self discipline. I see lots of problems, including health issues associated with fasting so in my mind, it is wrongly intepreted.
Sahih International
It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives [for sexual relations]. They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the sunset. And do not have relations with them as long as you are staying for worship in the mosques. These are the limits [set by] Allah, so do not approach them. Thus does Allah make clear His ordinances to the people that they may become righteous. [Al Baqarah 2:187]
Very clearly stated when to fast and when to breakfast. Regarding health issue even the other 11 mths anyone also can indulge in heavy eating. Not necessarily mth of Ramadhan. U are right to say fasting teaches one to be self discipline and not to do evil deeds. Its stated in the hadiths too. So if they do not follow the teaching of the Prophet they have only themselves to be blamed. In fact if want to discuss about fasting it has so many benefits. Every thing we do must be in moderation. Tat include breaking fast. Not just ramadhan but other days too.
2:187 It is permitted for you during the nights of discipline to maintain the cordial relationship (2:197) towards your women. They are clothing for you and you are their clothing. God knows indeed you - that you have wronged yourselves – thus He pardoned you and He forgave it from you. Thus, give them the good news (42:23). - And you shall imbibe whatever that had been prescribed for you by God - and savour (ku-luu-wash-robuu) until it is clear for you the white thread (35:27) from the black thread - from dawn – then - discipline yourself to the night. And do not cause them any unhappiness, when you are devoted in the consented decrees. That is the limit of God - thus you must not frown (ba-siru 75:24) them. That is how God explains His signs for mankind so that they observe.

WHY - The Mightiest Three Letter Word That Destroys Religion
Why does religion fail so miserably?
Because there is no return on investment.
It is as simple as that.
Our entire human existence depends on how we use two things - our time and resources - to generate goods, products and services that can sustain human life.
The farmer goes to the fields and spends hours cultivating the land because he knows that after a certain amount of time and effort he will be able to reap the harvest and feed himself, his family and maybe have some left over to trade for other goods or money.
The same thing with the factory owner and factory worker who goes to the factory and knows that after spending a certain amount of time and effort they will be able to produce some useful product which they can sell to the people and earn money in return. Money that can be used to buy food, clothes, put a roof over their heads etc.
Or an accountant, doctor, carpenter, shop keeper etc.
There is a real return on their investment of time and other resources. The things they do generate a real return which improves their lives immediately.
Religion produces nothing real or tangible.
That is all religion can do.
So how has religion survived for so long? Again the answer is simple. Through the use of fear (you will burn in hell), the use of force (apostates should be killed), through the use of coercion (when you die you will not be allowed to be buried in our graveyard) and other such simple and predictable threats.
Plus the lack of a real education. A real education means an education that makes you think and ask questions. To question the priests and the shamans.
Religious seminaries and religious schools require their cadre to study for years and years before they pass out as priests, shamans etc. Some of this study is laborious. But it is NOT intelligent at all. There is little use of intelligence.
Their entire study of religion can be defeated and totally thrown into confusion by just one simple three letter word : WHY.
Just ask them WHY for whatever they say.
And keep asking them WHY for whatever answers they give.
WHY ? WHY ? WHY ?
After a few rounds of asking WHY, they will give up.
In HG Wells famous sci-fi movie the War of the Worlds (produced in 1953), nothing could defeat the invading aliens. They were invincible. Then the aliens suddenly fell down and died. They were killed by simple bacteria in the air. It proved (to the aliens) that they did not belong on the earth.
The simple three letter word WHY is that bacteria in the air which will kill off all religion.
WHY is the mightiest religion killer. So do ask WHY. The next time you meet a holy person and they say something to you, politely ask them WHY?
For whatever answer they give, ask them again WHY?
And again. And again.
Your life will become better and better.
And you will frighten the crap out of the religious fellows.

U can still be an accountant, doctor or other professionals. No one stopping u. God also did not stop one from seeking knowledge. Infact the first ayat/word revealed from Allah upon the Prophet PBUH was Iqra' /Read which was later extended into an entire Surah or chapter by the name of Surah Alaq. So to say Islam produces nothing real or tangible is not correct. In fact Muslims should strife to work hard to reap what they sow in this world and Hereafter as mentioned in the Quran. We are not taught to meditate 24/7 in caves and only think of hereafter.
“Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!” [Albaqarah (201)]

No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock -
A lying, sinning forelock.
Then let him call his associates;
We will call the angels of Hell.
No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah ]. [Surah Al Alaq 96:15]
