SINGAPORE - An employee at Singapore's largest private security firm, Certis Cisco, was sentenced yesterday to 18 months' jail for stealing $50,000 from a vault in its headquarters.
Lim Ming Yao (picture), 19, a vault assistant, stole the money from the highly guarded centre at Jalan Afifi, off Paya Lebar Road.
The incident was the second time in a year that cash was stolen from the centre by an employee.
Certis Cisco handles money from ATMs, banks and more than 3,000 retail outlets. About $1.2 billion reportedly pass through the centre every day.
Lim, a Malaysian, also committed another offence when he left Singapore via Woodlands Checkpoint with the cash. It was his job to assist the Vault Custodian to issue, receive and manage metal cages used to store boxes of money
At around 9.45pm on June 5, Lim entered the vault, cut open one of the boxes and took out the $50,000. He hid the money in his jeans, before transferring it to a sling bag in his locker.
Lim left for Malaysia when he completed his shift the next morning.
He spent about $9,000 and kept the rest of the money inside his room in Malaysia. His crimes came to light when an Operation Control Executive at Certis Cisco made a police report about the loss on June 9. Lim was arrested soon afterwards and $41,150 and RM900 ($386) were recovered from him.
