A man was seen walking around Hong Lim Market and Food Centre with a knife on Jan. 8, prompting the police to be called.

In response to Mothership's queries, the police said they received a call for assistance at Block 531A Upper Cross Street at about 10:30am that day.

They arrested a 60-year-old man for carrying an offensive weapon in a public place, and seized a knife as case exhibit.

No injuries were reported, and police investigations are ongoing.

Many officers with shields

The vice-chair of the hawker association told Shin Min Daily News that he did not witness the incident, but saw a large group of police officers at the scene investigating.

The officers were holding shields, as though something major had happened, according to the vice-chair.

Later, he learnt that a man had been walking back and forth with a knife, and believed that the sight had alarmed people.

The man did not harm anyone or get aggressive with the knife, the vice-chair added.

Business at the market and hawker centre were also not affected by the incident.

Shin Min reported that operations were unaffected when they visited the place after the incident that morning.

Knife was purchased nearby

In photos shared with Shin Min by someone at Hong Lim Market and Food Centre, the police were interviewing people at a fruit stall and a general goods store.

The man had allegedly bought the knife from the general goods store, an employee of the bakery next door told Shin Min.

An employee of the store said they could not provide more details as the case was under investigation.

According to Shin Min, the man allegedly denied intending to harm anyone with the knife and said he bought it to cut food.

However, as he would take the knife out and wave it around, his actions alarmed someone who called the police.

How about a baseball bat or a tennis racquet? Are they offensive weapons?
