By cutting aid to Pakistan it might cause more problems as it gives more chances for the radicals to take over which makes things worse. But another point is Pakistan is China ally. China can step in with more aid to the Pakistanis as a counter to ah Neh land. But the radicals don't like China either so if the radicals might turn on China giving the yanks some breathing space. In theory, there's a grain of truth in Trump's various allegations on topics like UN, foreign aid and trade imbalances when taken in isolation.

However, what is clearly missing from the narrative is the political, economical, military and social returns that US got from other channels as a result of these 'investments'. The US did not get to be a superpower for the past 70+ years by being an altruistic idiot easily taken advantaged of by supposedly inferior nations.

Whether the returns are worth the investments in this current day and age is a discussion that is being debated by various camps within US policy makers, but the point is the issue is far more nuanced then what is being twittered out by Trump.

There has been signs that China seems cautiously optimistic of slowly filling in the any vacuum left from a US retrenchment. The same bad stuff described by Trump will apply similarly to China as well, does anyone seriously believe the Chinese are so dumb that despite seeing US being taken advantaged of for 70+ years, they are still willing to wade in?

Allow me to touch on a bit about China. In some forums (including here), I also noticed a lot of bashing towards our establishment's response to China, maybe these are the chinese new-immigrants or trolls. China is behaving in a very unusual matter towards us in recent years.

In my younger ears, we do really help China a lot, the new leadership is really mean to us, and prefers to mingle with corrupted regimes who do their bidding. Yes we are small, so we try to pacify all superpowers, including Russia. However, China became unbearingly arrogant towards us these days, demanding us to side them on global issues, or exit our current defence partnership with Taiwan.

Without the Taiwanese grooming our Air and Naval forces in earlier days, and without the five power defence arrangements (with Australia, NZ, Malaysia and UK) and alliance with US, Indonesia probably swallowed us by now. In the same light, I begin to ponder, without these allegiance, we risk being swallowed by China.

Come think of it, China shouldn't be treating us like HK or a vassal state? Or is it just my biased opinion?

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will allow the Chinese yuan to be used for imports, exports and financing transactions for bilateral trade and investment activities, in a move economists said on Wednesday (Jan 3) would simplify a massive Chinese investment project.

Both public and private sector enterprises may use the yuan for bilateral trade and investment, the central State Bank of Pakistan said in a statement issued Tuesday.

"As per current foreign exchange regulations, Chinese Yuan (CNY) is an approved foreign currency for denominating foreign currency transactions in Pakistan," it said.

"In terms of regulations in Pakistan, CNY is at par with other international currencies such as USD, Euro and JPY," it added.

The bank said that in light of a massive Chinese infrastructure project in Pakistan, the move would "yield long-term benefits for both the countries".

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a US$54 billion project launched in 2013 linking western China to the Indian Ocean via Pakistan, has been hailed as a "game changer" by Pakistani officials.


They hope the power stations and transmission lines built as part of the project will help ease Pakistan's chronic power crisis.

Economic analyst and former government adviser on finance Salman Shah welcomed the State Bank's move, saying that avoiding dollar transactions in the implementation of CPEC would "simplify matters very considerably".

The Chinese economy is now one of the biggest in the world, he said, justifying the use of the Chinese currency of choice.
