Times Square crash: 'Multiple casualties' and one dead after speeding car ploughs into pedestrians

From The Independent

Multiple casualties have been reported at Times Square in New York after a speeding car drove into pedestrians.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) said one person had died as a result of their injuries. Thirteen others are receiving medical treatment, according to the New York Fire Department.

Buildings in the surrounding area were placed on lockdown.

The NYPD reports the car lost control between 42nd and 43rd streets at the popular Manhattan tourist destination. It eventually crash into a pole and stopped at 45th street and Broadway.

A witness told Reuters the vehicle drove against the flow of traffic, striking the pedestrians. One injured pedestrian said the driver's actions appeared "intentional".

Police, however, do not believe the incident is connected to terrorism, according to CBS. Officers believe the driver, who is now in custody, may have been intoxicated.

A NYPD spokesperson said their investigation into the incident is "very preliminary".

"We don't have any details yet but on the information that we've got so far it looks more like an out of control vehicle at this time," he told the network.

WNBC reports the driver panicked and attempted to flee the scene before being detained by police.

Maybe intoxicated by violence & a promise of 72 virgins?

This is America....a good lawyer arguing for the driver can convince the jury that the pedestrians were at fault and that the driver should be generously compensated for the trauma he had to go through and also for his damaged car.

The same goes for here...the pedestrian is at fault for using the crossing & not paying attention; these days texting, listening to music, watching videos, getting steamy while texting on their smart phone...& very bewildered that, they now live in the 'smartphone'..

What you posted is true in the case of sinkies here....but for this event the pedestrians were on the pavement ...and the car was reportedly going against the flow of traffic.

It seems the driver was high on the drug PCP(angel dust) & claims that god made him do it.

From CNN

(CNN)An 18-year-old woman was killed and at least 22 people injured Thursday when a speeding car plowed into pedestrians in Manhattan's bustling Times Square, city officials said.
Police identified the woman as Alyssa Elsman, a resident of Portage, Michigan.

The driver of the 2009 Honda Accord -- Richard Rojas, 26, of the Bronx -- tested positive for PCP and told police that God made him do it, a law enforcement source told CNN.
The suspect, who suffered from "psychological issues," told police he expected officers to shoot him, according to the source.

Rojas has been arrested twice in New York -- in 2015 and 2008 -- for drunken driving, New York Police Commissioner James O'Neill said.
There is no indication the incident, which unfolded just before noon, was an act of terrorism, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and other officials said. It is being investigated as an accident, a police official said. Charges against the driver are pending.
One of the hospitals treating the injured said four patients were in critical condition Thursday night. Two were in serious condition.
NYC Health + Hospitals Bellevue said it received 13 patients, 10 adults and three teenagers. The serious injuries included pelvic fractures, internal bleeding and head injuries.
