The first five officers who performed their duty as Vigil Guards, were the Chief of Defence Staff, COA, CNV, CAF, and a BG.
I believe that the Commissioner of Police also led a team of very senior SPF officers.
I am surprised that the PMO or the State Funeral Committee did not restrict the Vigil Guards to those of LTC and above, and DSP and above, as there are definitely more than 60 SAF officers at LTC and higher, as well as more than 60 SPF officers who are at DSP and higher.
Perhaps, they wish to have a few Majors and Captains, as well as a few ASP and DSP.
As reflected in the photo on that url, that officer with a "silver" pip and a crest is probably from the SPF, which means he is a DSP (Deputy Superintendent of Police).
As we scroll down, there is a SAF officer with three bars, which means he is a Captain. It looks like he has served for at least ten years, as reflected by the two conduct medals. During my days (late 1970's), some of us were commissioned after 9.5 months, whereas for those of us who went through BMT, School of Infantry Section Leaders (as it was then known), then posted to a battalion, return to OCS in SAFTI, we were commissioned after about 16 months of NS (to serve another 14 months before ROD or ORD). Some of us were promoted to LTA (Lieutenant, and we had 2 pips in the old days, not 2 bars) after 24 months, and almost all after 28 months. If one signs on as a regular, and as a non SAFOS, it is very likely that he will be promoted to Captain after about 5 to 6 years in service. I believe that a SAFOS will be promoted to Captain, within one to two years of graduation from university, if not sooner. There are very very few SAFOS who were not promoted to CPT within 5 years, and the SAFOS were on a different pay scale compared to us NSF or non SAFOS officers.
What is the big deal. If I am not mistaken the Comm of Police and Chief of Def report to their respective Perm Sec. In reality, they are only dy sec in the adminstrative service.

I think now safos entry level start off with captain rank already
Thank you for correction and enlightenment, Charlie.
Are you sure they are Captains and not Military experts.
That officer with a GUARDS tab and it looks like a Guards beret, and if I recall correctly, the article also mentioned a Captain (with a Malay) name.
I believe that Military Experts have a different "rank" or bar structure.
I am not as knowledgeable as most of you, because i am unfamiliar with the Military Expert Scheme.
Ok...there are Military Experts as seen in earlier reports. ME5 or so above. Same as Major/LTC rank.
The ME system is weird and in my view unecessary
why the senior officers to stand guard for our emperor lee ? in ancient China, it was just the low ranks guards + a high rank commander ( overall in charge and didn't stand there 24/7 ) that guarded the emperor's coffin during the funeral wake.
because privates aren't PSC scholars
Unable to tell whether or not all of those who stood as Vigil Guards were scholars.
I speculate that there must a few who are non scholar officers.
of course you can't tell. But some of them will definitely be. Remember CCS and Mrs Lee?
