As reflected in the photo on that url, that officer with a "silver" pip and a crest is probably from the SPF, which means he is a DSP (Deputy Superintendent of Police).

As we scroll down, there is a SAF officer with three bars, which means he is a Captain. It looks like he has served for at least ten years, as reflected by the two conduct medals. During my days (late 1970's), some of us were commissioned after 9.5 months, whereas for those of us who went through BMT, School of Infantry Section Leaders (as it was then known), then posted to a battalion, return to OCS in SAFTI, we were commissioned after about 16 months of NS (to serve another 14 months before ROD or ORD). Some of us were promoted to LTA (Lieutenant, and we had 2 pips in the old days, not 2 bars) after 24 months, and almost all after 28 months. If one signs on as a regular, and as a non SAFOS, it is very likely that he will be promoted to Captain after about 5 to 6 years in service. I believe that a SAFOS will be promoted to Captain, within one to two years of graduation from university, if not sooner. There are very very few SAFOS who were not promoted to CPT within 5 years, and the SAFOS were on a different pay scale compared to us NSF or non SAFOS officers.

Perhaps, they wish to have a few Majors and Captains, as well as a few ASP and DSP.

I speculate that most regular SAF and SPF officers would desire to be a member of the team of Vigil Guards, because it is "once in a life time opportunity."

If I was still serving, I will volunteer, but they may or may not select me.

I did not indicate that it is or it was a big deal.
It is just an event or rather a significant event in Singapore.

Are you sure they are Captains and not Military experts.

By the way, you may already know, that in the SPF, one crest is an ASP (Assistant Superintendent of Police), one pip and one crest is a DSP, and two pips and one crest is a Superintendent of Police.

Whereas in the SAF, one crest (more affectionately known as "crab") is a Major, two crests (in the old days, it was one pip and one crest) is a LTC, and three crests (in the old days, two pips and one crest) is a COL or Colonel.

I believe that Military Experts have a different "rank" or bar structure.
I am not as knowledgeable as most of you, because i am unfamiliar with the Military Expert Scheme.

Ok...there are Military Experts as seen in earlier reports. ME5 or so above. Same as Major/LTC rank.

I believe that I have seen a few Military Experts who stood as Vigil Guards, as reflected photos from the other day (Toronto Eastern Daylight Savings Time is 12 hours behind Singapore).

why the senior officers to stand guard for our emperor lee ? in ancient China, it was just the low ranks guards + a high rank commander ( overall in charge and didn't stand there 24/7 ) that guarded the emperor's coffin during the funeral wake.

Unable to tell whether or not all of those who stood as Vigil Guards were scholars.

Agree.
The first team or set of vigil guards were full of scholars: LG Ng, MG Perry Lim, Rear Admiral who is the CNV, and one BG.

the point is is it normal to get your majors and colonels to guard the coffin 24/7 ? what about other countries ?
