SINGAPORE — A man accused of raping and sexually assaulting a part-time social escort after allegedly impersonating a police officer claimed trial to his charges on Tuesday (16 March).

Opening its case against 32-year-old Ng Yi Yao, the prosecution told the court that Ng had threatened to hurt the then 22-year-old woman in a hotel room where she had been assigned a job, and then sexually assaulted her. Before his arrest, Ng was working as a RedMart delivery driver for a short period.

While Ng has indicated that he will plead guilty to the charge of impersonating a police officer, he will be claiming trial to two charges each of aggravated rape and sexual penetration.

In addition to being a part-time social escort, the victim, now 24, had another full-time job and was studying for a degree part time. She cannot be named to protect her identity.

As part of her work, the alleged victim provided sexual services and liaised with an agent, whom she knew as Kelvin.

On 21 February 2019, Kelvin informed the woman that he had two possible jobs for her at Harbour Ville Hotel that evening.

The woman arrived at the hotel at about 8pm and waited for Ng, who identified himself as a police officer after showering. He allegedly asked the woman for her phone and NRIC, and the woman complied as she was afraid.

In the course of the night, the two switched rooms at Ng’s request. “At some point of time that evening… the accused made remarks which the victim understood to mean he wanted her to perform sexual acts with him, if she wanted to leave freely. The victim refused such an offer. The accused continued to ask the victim a few more times but she rejected him,” said the prosecution in its opening address.

Suspecting that Ng was not a police officer, the woman asked him for his police ID, but he refused to produce it. The woman then sent a message to a friend to signal that she was in trouble.

After another exchange, Ng’s tone allegedly changed and he threatened to hurt her. The woman saw Ng holding a red Swiss Army knife and felt afraid. Ng then allegedly raped and sexually assaulted her.

Following the acts, Ng allegedly watched the woman as she showered. He later admitted he was not a police officer and proposed to move in with the woman.

The woman tried to cut the conversation but Ng insisted on sending her home. He also insisted on giving her $40. The two then took a taxi to the woman’s home, where she later called the police.

The trial continues on Tuesday.
