China and Hongkong both need each other. the latter def more. their name-calling and tensions are over culture, values and livelihood issues, not deeper issues like race or religion. it wouldn't become a political hotspot.
both sides just need to understand and love each other more then everything can be resolved amicably.

To be fair everyone of every nationality does that. Do muslim immigrants to europe stop praticing islam and don't wear the burka for eg? What about those white houses built in colonial africa? The fact of the matter is this. PPl that travel from other nations tend to practice their own culture even when they settle in foreign land. Hence you see many european style buildings in countries in africa, in india, in malaysia and so on. You see africans behaving like how they behave in europe or in the US but here's the important thing. What do you have to say about that? You see i'm beginning to notice this double standard. Immigrants from other countries behave however the fuck they please like australian man goes to mrt shirtless but that's ok. China ppl behave like what they do in china that's not ok.

They normally quietly intergrate into the community & cluster into communities of their own kind on the land the had adopted. They are usually peace loving people, until politics starts rearing its ugly fingers.

The problem here, is not that we are against the influx of foreigners, hadn't our forefathers 'foreign' immigrants to a place called the Nanyang?, had the Malaysians came here in droves & fo decades we have been giving Malaysia their citizens, a livelihood & income?. Why the discontentment now?, the gist of it all is, the people rightly feel that, their government, the ones that they voted & trusted in, had allowed a huge deluge of foreigners into the country & have not imaginery, muscled them out of opportunity to put bread on their table & a roof over their head.

Who would bother, if that Ang Moh would go round in their boombox, or even sun tan nude on Sentosa Beach? or that Ah Tiong who sit, curse & swear loudly & even spit? or their women eyeing the old folks in people's park or they mass of Pinays at lucky Plaza looking for Love? ( money)?? or the Indonesians at City Plaza & the list goes on. Not to mention the Ah Nehs, the Bangla dums, the Pinoys who have flooded the work force also, not the bue collared workers, but the white collared ones.

Singaporeans are generally tolerant of these foreigners, but as I had mentioned, their real discontenment is, they have been muscled out of the abilty to put a square meal on the table & a roof over their head. ( don't start with their attitudes, productivity or even uprading). They have become unsure of the future not only for themselves, but their children. That is the main discontenment plus, one can throw in having to serve National Service for the males as a major disadvantage ( not new) and having to serve reservist.

We are expected to behave, where we have migrated & intergrate into any society or country, unless one is the CONQUERER!.

Muslim immigrants should behave like the Europeans when they emigrate to Europe. By this statement I am not saying that they must totally give up their Arabic/Middle-eastern or islamic roots and adopt a very secular or modernized Christianized attitude. They are free to follow their cultural and religious practices but provided these do not violate the principles on which the host communities are built. Unfortunately this has not been the case for some Muslim immigrants in European countries. Some Muslim communities refuse to assimilate themselves into the wider societies. In Britain you have Muslims arguing for the establishment of Sharia laws. Forced marriages - a gross violation of secular principles - are not unheard of. Homegrown terrorism is also a problem; some insurgents hold British passports and received British education. In France, we have the veil controversy and lobbying by Islamic groups to fight for a departure from France's universal laws and values. (You can access major international news sites and atheist sites for more information.) I am sure that for some Europeans, if they had their way, they would have deported the whole lot back to their Middle-eastern and African shitholes.

To compare ang mohs to Muslim immigrants in Europe is like comparing apples to oranges. The former do not impose themselves on their adopted cultures as much as the latter do. Sinkieland is in many ways a Westernized country, with secular values, and its people (especially those below 35 years of age) generally hold liberal attitudes. The playing of loud music, talking loudly (I think ATs talk a hell lot louder!) and suntanning in public - these actions are not exactly alien to Sinkies. Many Sinkies do the same thing. Ang mohs (especially the expatriates) may prefer to interact among themselves but theirs are not a totally closed community. It is quite common to see ang mohs walk side by side with Sinkies, chatting away. I really hate this argument that, since we are the descendants of immigrants, we should respect our roots and be more accepting of immigrants. I do not deny that our forebears came from China and other proverty-stricken countries in the region. This, however, does not mean we have our roots in these countries. Insofar as any true blue Sinkie is concerned, our roots are in Sinkieland. We were born here, we grew up here, we received our education here, we did our NS here, and we remain very much a product of our culture. Besides, during the days of our "foreign" forebears, Sinkieland was not even a country. How can anyone keep going on about Sinkies not recognizing our "roots" in China, India, and Mudland, when our roots are here?!

ah you are fair and honest to admit on the double standards shown. Yes china has its own faults everyone has them and nobody is perfect. The problem is when it involves china and chinese ppl ppl always exggerrate them and ignore their good pts. Do you agree? One forummer also mentioned it to me but he was talking about china ppl but it applies to singaporean chinese. Notice how ppl will say sg is racist even in singapore and it's always something small and insignificant but refuse to talk on the good pts of singapore.
