Loan leads to suicide attempt

JUST two months after her marriage, Mastura decided to end her life.

It was not because her husband had two-timed her, but because of a RM1,000 loan she took that ballooned to an astronomical RM30,000 in just two months, Metro Ahad reported.

Furthermore, she was given only RM300 of the money she had asked to borrow.

Not able to face the harassment, the 26-year-old newlywed cut her wrist with a razor blade in a bid to end her life on Monday.

Fortunately, family members in the house came to her rescue and rushed her to the Putrajaya Hos-pital.

“I would rather die than face the loan sharks,” she told the paper.

The problem stemmed from the loan sharks who had her ATM card, and were purposely pumping money into her account to make it seem like she had borrowed a lot from them.

Four months earlier, she took a loan of RM5,000 and when she could not pay the amount, which had later increased to RM13,000, her mother came forward to pay RM3,800 to the moneylenders.

The family then lodged a police report at the Putrajaya police station and also lodged a complaint with the Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association.

MCA public complaints bureau chairman Datuk Michael Chong said the trend among illegal money lenders was to impose higher interest rates on bumiputra borrowers.

“The point here is that the ah long make their own rules,” he said.

>FIFTY-TWO Vietnamese women were nabbed at an entertainment joint in Puchong which was operating without a valid licence, Metro Ahad reported.

Enforcers from the Serdang police D7 division said they acted on a tip-off that the joint was offering women – aged 20 to 30 and holding social visit passes – for sex services.

District police chief Asst Comm Abdul Razak Elias said the premises had been raided several times before but the owners had continuously defied the law to run their illegal business.

Some 85 customers were screened but no other arrest was made in the 11.40pm raid on Friday.
