yogmaggotThe YOG “dog” food scandal continues to rumble on after it emerges that not only the volunteers are being served “dirty” food which led to a mass food poisoning outbreak last Sunday, but athletes as well.
While the volunteers are being given substandard food unfit for human consumption, the same caterer from the Singapore Food Industries serves three daily buffet meals to the athletes. However, it seems that the food they eat may not be quite clean after all.
According to a New Paper report yesterday, an athlete found a LIVE maggot wriggling in her food at the Youth Olympic Village. When asked by TNP, a spokesperson from the Singapore YOG Organizing Committee (SYOGOC) said:
“We did receive feedback from an athlete on a maggot found in her food.
The quality assurance personnel was alerted and clarified with the athlete that as the maggot was found alive, it was likely that it might have been introduced from the environment.”
Since maggots do not have wings and do not fly, how did it manage to find its way to the athlete’s food?
SYOGOC should launch an internal investigation to find out where the maggot came from instead of giving such a lame excuse to “smoke” the athlete who surely would not have been impressed.
It is strange that NEA has proclaimed that it has conducted stringent checks on the YOG kitchens and caterers and found no lapse in the food handling processes.
After nearly a week, the cause of the mass food poisoning outbreak remains unknown like this case. The PAP minister Dr Vivian said investigations will take “some time.” We will probably only know the truth months after the YOG has ended when the scandal has faded away completely from the collective consciousness of the public.
