I remember my kids has to be tested for English proficiency before being admitted to international schools overseas and one school even went to the extent of bringing the son to walk around the school and point out various things to test his conversational ability.

The last 2 dynasties were the Ming and the Qing. Of the Ming, other than the founding emperor, the only other Ming emperor who was a gifted general was Zhu Di. He was also the emperor who commissioned Cheng Ho's voyage.
Zhu Di was one of the sons of the founding emperor, but was passed over in the succession line. When opportunity arose, Zhu Di rebelled against the 2nd Ming emperor based in Nanking with around 800 of his household militia from his base in Peking. With 800 men and gathering a lot of defectors, he managed to seize the government.
One reason for the failure of the 2nd Ming emperor was that they had no more good generals left. The founding emperor had them all killed after beating the Mongols, for fear that the great generals may seize the empire for themselves.
Great. So now to give it to the Manchus.
