Raise retirement age to 70, says Boon Heng
TWO labour stalwarts have called for the retirement age here to be raised, with one suggesting it should be upped to 70 years.

Former NTUC secretary-general Lim Boon Heng, as well as veteran economist Lim Chong Yah, the former National Wages Council (NWC) chairman, yesterday made the suggestion at the launch of Prof Lim Chong Yah's book.

Titled Singapore's National Wages Council - An Insider's View, the book documents the history of the NWC.

Currently, Singapore's statutory minimum retirement age is 62, but employers have to offer re-employment to those eligible up to age 65. But those re-employed may suffer a pay cut and lose benefits and bonuses.

Yesterday, Prof Lim - who is emeritus professor at the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) - suggested that the mandatory retirement age be upped to 65 years or more.

This would help Singapore "cope with the shortage of local labour supply".

But Mr Lim, the former labour chief, went further, suggesting 70 years.

He noted that he has always pushed for a rise in the retirement age, adding: "And I am on record as saying that we should make it 70."

It may not help the economy, but the blame can be wholly pushed onto the elderly if they're struggling with the cost of living: they're too lazy to get a job.

Actually can propose to raise the retirement age to 95 years old where average sinkies dies at 80 & the employers will still have to pay the deceased salary for minimum of 15 years after he has dropped dead lah! This is so much in line with the PAP policy for their retired PAP MPs & Ministers lah where retirement pension can also factor in market movement of salary lah! Salary rise, pensioned pay outs also increased accordingly even though the PAP pensioner retired & drew the pension 20 years ago lah!
