SINGAPORE — The National Library Board (NLB) will be rolling out a new children’s book subscription service from November, it announced on Thursday (Oct 1).

In a statement, NLB said patrons can sign up for the service from Friday. The service, called The Little Book Box, has a monthly fee of S$10.70, inclusive of GST.

Customers can expect to receive a curated selection of eight English children’s books, which will be picked from a variety of fiction and non-fiction books.

The books also span a broad range of children’s interest and are catered for two age groups — from four to six years old and seven to nine years old.

The pilot subscription service will run for nine months, and end next July. It will be capped at 1,000 subscribers and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The loan duration for books received under the service is 21 days excluding the delivery time. Subscribers can return the books at any of the 25 public libraries islandwide.

As the subscription does not fall within the usual library loan quota, subscribers can continue to borrow up to 16 books from the library, said NLB.

I flipped through some children's books in a library. It is my opinion that kids these days are being dumbed down.

For many decades the NLB's challenge was declining memberships and NLB had to find ways to increase memberships and readership. Now, in an age where children have other distractions like social media, online access, NLB's brainwave is to start a subscription service.

If I am a child, I would rather spend the monthly fee of $10.70 on buying an app, subscribing to an online video game, to Tik Tok etc.

Who is the brainchild behind this subscription plan?

Ah yes, nothing like teaching them how to be an obedient sheep at an early age. Let the authorities make the decisions for you, you don't think too much, just accept whatever's given to you.

why in heaven's name they need to screw the kids $10 and 70 cents???
its called the NATIONAL library for God's sake and usually poor kid's only enjoyment

I am more concerned about so called children books which promote the left wing bleeding heart liberal agenda of poofter rights etc
