Let's be grateful for what we have here

RECENT events in neighbouring countries ("More states in Malaysia may soon ration water"; last Wednesday and "Daily bombings, shootings in Bangkok"; last Thursday) serve as a timely reminder for us to be grateful for what we have in Singapore. Time and again, our leaders have reminded Singaporeans not to take things for granted as the peace and prosperity which we have been enjoying thus far are a result of assiduous and ongoing efforts. For an island state, we are, indeed, the proverbial oasis in the middle of the desert. It is easy to lose track of the realities of our regional geo-political climate when Singaporeans are faced with various frustrations in our daily lives.

While these frustrations remain valid, let us not lose sight of the fact that at the very least, we have clean, drinkable water from our taps 24/7, whereas our counterparts in Malaysia have to make do with water rationing.

Let us also be grateful that we do not have a political stalemate like Thailand which would otherwise paralyse our country.

Let us be grateful that despite frequent MRT service disruptions, at the very least, we have an MRT system.

Imagine life without the MRT and having to put up with traffic gridlock. Just look at cities without a mass rapid transit system and one should appreciate that.

Being thankful for what one has would result in one having more. If we concentrate on what we do not have, we will never have enough.

As part of a larger universe, I am most thankful for what we have in Singapore.

What the fuck is this? Election coming?

I agree with Elgar. My posts convey the same message on a daily basis.

The PAP may not be perfect and Singapore may not be Utopia but I can assure you it is a damned site better than most other countries.

Don't compare sinkapore with zimbabwe lah. Compare it with first world countries, ok. No land, no water, locals treated like dirt by the government, expensive housing that sinkees will spend a life-time to pay off, unaffordable healthcare for major complications, forced to serve in the military ...what is so good?

Elgar must either be a scholar or a student who cant think.

Heard tis statement 50 yrs ago by the very Fist Generation of Snkies,
later in years under PAP they woke up with their arse burnt.

Guys lets be non partisan. Focus on specific policies, rather than political parties. This surely is more constructive, rather than frame it as a pap vs wp thingy. Cheers and God bless

I compare Singapore with NZ as I am living in NZ now and have first hand knowledge of life in both countries.

NZ is a nice place. The people are happier.

They're happier because they are not as materialistic. NZ is traditionally egalitarian. They have more respect for each other as a community. This has nothing to do with the government. The government can change. The Kiwi psyche does not.

However, the country has many social problems. Drugs and crime are rampant. Teen suicides are high. Unemployment is 3 times higher compared to Singapore.

The Auckland rail system is old and creaky and breaks down far more often than the SMRT. Everyone wants it upgraded but the government and local council don't have the money to fund the upgrade so it's all talk and no action.

Gambling is causing major issues here too. Sky city has been around far longer than the MBS plus every pub has pokey machines where beneficiaries spend all the free money they're given.

For every failure of the Singapore government, I can easily list 3 failures of the NZ government.

It makes no sense that New Zealand would be an egalitarian society considering it was settled by the British. Even today, Britain remains an extremely class -based society.

It makes perfect sense because it was the working class and not the landed gentry that colonised the place. Many left Britain precisely because the motherland was so class conscious.

These were the sorts of notices that were place in newspapers in the UK to attract early immigrants.

Okay so New Zealanders are descended from the most wretched and lowest class of British society.

How does that make you feel, living in their midst?

I can't see how it makes any difference what sort of class the early settlers were from. How I feel is based entirely on my own perception of my life and my surroundings.

Besides those days are long gone and NZ now has an extremely diverse mix from all over the world.

"agricultural laborers, shepherds, miners, brickmakers, mechanics, handicraftsmen, and domestic servants" we're not exactly the most wretched and lowest class of british society at that time. the worst scums and thugs of britain were either in jail, became pirates, joined the army or were shipped (shanghaied) overseas to near slavery work on sea routes and ports of call nobody wanted to go. some of these losers and convicts ended up in arsetralia. :D

Spot on! Arsetralia is egalitarian in nature too.
