Here are the quotations from a recent interview with Lee Kuan Yew by Seth Mydans of The New Your Times, extracts taken from ST think (pg 29) Sept 12, 2010.

"So, when is the last leaf falling"

"I can feel the gradual decline of energy & vitality", " And I mean generally every year, when you know you are not on the same level as last year, But that's life"

"How do I comfort myself?", he asked. "Well, I say, 'Life is just like that" "what is next, I do not know," he said, "Nobody has ever come back"

"At night, hearing the sounds of his wife's discomfort in the next room, he calms himself with 20 minutes of meditation, reciting a mantra he was taught by a Christian friend: "Ma Ra Na Tha" - Maranatha " "come to me, O Lord Jesus"...

about Catherine Lim description of him " She is novelist!, he cried. "Therefor, she simplifies a person's character", making what he called a "graphic caricature of me", "But is anybody that simple or aimplistic"

"He quoted a Chinese proverb: Do not judge a man until his coffin is closed. "Close the coffin, then decide", he said. "Then you assess him. I may still do something foolish before the lid is closed on me"

It appears to me that he is contradicting himself in these 2 statements.

In the 1st statement, he claims that he does not know whether there is an afterlife & believes that nobody has ever come back (from the dead).

Yet in the later statement, he beseeches Jesus whom Christians believe to be God & resurrected from the dead & worship as God, to come to him.

  :)

These are a marked difference of his remark of old, "when he says, he will rise from the grave".

He recited the mantra "Maranatha"...I don't think Christians will recite that over & over again?, most will know the meaning of Maranatha, "Our Lord Come" Christians will reflect & meditate on the teachings of the bible, not recite a mantra..

but for him:
He has made everything appropriate in its time He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end. Ecclesiastes 3:11 NASB

All of us wether rich or poor or... have to face eternity someday; and Lee Kuan Yew is facing his...that is his last leg, that will come, when the last leaf falls from hie tree.

He quoted a Chinese proverb: Do not judge a man until his coffin is closed.

what's this proverb anyone? I can only think of 不见棺材不掉泪.

We must dig deeper into Chinese proverbs, it is evident that those that we learnt in school is for the 'lesser mortals'... ha ha ha:D

One week holdiay???:D

Was thinking of gained their freedom & losing their chance at justice.

I've seen more than my share of unhinged Sporeans. Maybe these are the lucky ones. There are many others who believe they are untouched. Many of them with premature white hair, unhappy faces, neglect their kids in the pursuit of $$$, unhappy old maids,....

Many are already on holiday, replaced by foreigners & unlikely to benefit from a weeks holiday.

As for myself I have become very, very cynical

I don't think he's referring to that Chinese proverb; he should be referring to the English idom "the last nail in the coffin." Yes, the last nail, to make sure the lid is tightly secured, he can't get out and can't get up. :D

Nail?? Nail lu eh si lang tow ah !!!:D

Can't get up ?? Mesti try naik ..... All The Way !!!:D

You think in the last leg , can one still score a hat trick ?

After i read this article , i can sense his anxiety ... I can put aside some of my disagreement with him. We respect him........though he screw up a lot of things for Singapore. He too also did a good job with Singapore. But as i have said before, every generation has its own HERO and Villain. So he should be leaving his SON to run Singapore .... !

EVERYONE or every man sin in this life ... sin not as in doing something bad but rather sin as in you are in this world , naturally, you are sinful.

One can only believe in Christ and he will be saved ....once he accepted Christ ... and when he is in HEAVEN. I am very sure he do not want to jump back to this SINFUL world. He will not want to jump out from coffin anymore.

I pray salvation for him ... through Christ.

I dont think it's contradictary. Like everyone of us, there's no way to know for sure if there's indeed an afterlife. Again, like everyone else, he's anxious about his afterlife and I sense he hopes to find God in his last days.

My point is this: if LKY truely believes that nobody has ever come back from the dead, why beseech Jesus who is dead ( unless one is a Christian who believes otherwise) to come to him?

My comments on the above statements:

1st statement:
I agree with his remarks that a person's character is multi-faceted & it is too simplistic to label a person as such & such.

But it must also be said in all fairness, that one should judge Catherine Lim's comments regarding him in the correct context.

2nd statement:
Seems to him that he is saying that he has not done anything foolish so far in his lifetime.
