1 Subhas - Over-rated. Takes up high profile cases to boost his reputation as a fighter in court. Still seeking the SC title but not likely he will be successful. Charges a bomb to defend you.

2 Ravi - If client is not mad, will get mad if in close proximity with him after a short while.

3 Michael Khoo - worth spending the bomb for this SC. Very sharp.

Conveyancing Lawyers : Another Group ( worth noting )

this group makes tonnes of money

milking clients' money via

cpf ordinary a/c .

Eg : u give them a pty case.

they will deduct yr fees from

yr cpf a/c

like hungry wolfs waiting to

makan their preys at the HDB hub.

Their offices are strategically located

in HDB hub or very near to it.

HDB flats buyers beware ...

Subhas like only good for reducing sentences........like never hear him get guilty clients off the hook.......

most of the stories told in court by defendents..........childish and stupid..........

i doubt S'pore has any really good lawyers that can get guilty clients off the hook.......

You are one of the few who perceives Subhas as ordinary. Many people (uneducated ones) actually believe he is capable of performing miracles. They fail to realise that all cases are different. When the outcome is lenient towards an accused (Subhas as counsel) compared to another (similar charge), credit will go to Subhas.

Imho, once AGC decides to charge an accused person, 99% of the time successful. Prosecution always have the upper hand.

Many also believe that lawyers who were once DPP or DJ sure better than many others. This is not true all the time. It is always much easier to prosecute than defend. People stupidly believe coz these lawyers will wayang them that they know so-and-so in AGC or Sub Ct being working colleagues previously and more likely to get a lenient sentence or having reduced charges.

Care to elaborate more on this? Is this for the purchase or sales of HDB?
I sold my flat some years back using a lawyer whose office is upstairs of HDB hub.

I know a lawyer who likes to use this line.

But there was a case where 2 accused both accomplices charged for same crime with equal participation and similar background (age, previous conviction etc).
The one that engaged him got 22 months while the other represented by another lawyer got 60 months.
Pure luck/coincidence or something else at work?

The number of charges and role played in the commission of offence(s) are some determining factors. The one who kena 60 mths should ask his lawyer to explain the massive difference in sentencing. If appeal to High Court, any hanky panky on the part of the DJ would be exposed quite easily. There is such a thing as 'market rate' when it comes to sentencing, with or without lawyers.

Another myth...

Those with lawyers to represent gets reduced sentences compared to those without.
I have seen this to be quite true though must admit many factors come into play. So hiring a lawyer is better than none? I have come across the rare cases of defendant kena screwed by lawyers as well but these are very rare cases.

How about a general rating of law firms here? Eg. Lee & Lee, Kattar Wong etc.

I opine lawyers play a role but it depends on the accused too. If an accused is able to mitigate reasonably well, the sentence should be prety close.

Allow me to state these common mitigating factors:
1 accused untraced on criminal records - 1st time offender;
2 accused very remorseful - confessed to IO at earliest opportunity;
3 accused very cooperative with investigation and investigators;
4 accused not likely to re-offend again (very very impt. Current CJ, then AG highlighted this before);
5 grandfather/grandmother story - accused sole provider of family, mother/father sick etc

To be continued later.

6 accused undergoing/planning to seek psychiatric treatment (where applicable);
7 immaturity/bad influence from partners-in-crime but parents assure the court that they will from now on exercise better control of their child;
8 crime wasn't vicious, was a victimless crime (where applicable);
9 medical, mental history of accused, his family etc;
10 accused a volunteer here-and-there or accused's contribution to society;
11 good reference from employer/school, people of significance etc.
12 in white-collar cases, restitution made

Tan Cheng Yew was extradited not too long ago, charged and convicted.
A story about him appeared in the ST not too long ago, although no "real names" were used. :D

How about David Rasif? Has he managed to escape detection totally or are the authorities even looking for him?

Many Singaporeans don't know how to use lawyers correctly, whereas foreigners, especially Americans and Europeans know. That's why the differences in the sentences. And Singaporeans start complaining about double standards in legal proceedings and verdicts. It's their own ignorance, sometimes even naivity.

You cannot rely on a lawyer to cook up a story in your defense. You have to to cook it up yourself. Then can your lawyer bring it up to court to serve. You have to instruct your lawyer, then your lawyer advises you on the legality, implication and consequence of your instruction, how to be carried out in your best legal interest.

He left Bangkok for Jakarta and from there, no sound no picture. CAD merely placed him on the Interpol wanted list. I am sure DR would have taken on another identity. If he's not careful, his $$$ will be gone pretty soon.

From the reports, he could have got away with 8 figures. It should be enough if he's not extravagant.
