Knee Arthritis: is there an alternative cure besides surgery?

I had a torn meniscus a couple years ago, did PT for a few months and it helped a lot. Surgery wasn’t needed in my case, but rest and consistency mattered.
I noticed significant improvement after 1 year of physiotherapy. There is still around 10 - 15% of pain when walking down the stairs, after sitting down for too long or walking too far.

Seeing 100 years old Mahathir living and walking like a healthy person should not make one wonder why good health isn’t achievable

I had a long stretch where nothing seemed to touch my joint pain either, and mixing things up helped more than pushing harder on the same fixes. I ended up focusing on low‑impact strength work and short bursts of heat therapy, which took the edge off more than I expected. I also once saw Dallas ankle specialist Dr. Sakowski for a separate issue, and that experience reminded me how much difference the right specialist can make.

My condition has been diagnosed as osteoarthritis which is common in older adults. Both orthopaedic surgeons I consulted at Mount Elizabeth and NUH said that the cartilage that cushions my left knee joint has worn down over time. I used to play football on weekends, jog and workout at the gym 5 days a week. I probably overdid the active part in a bid to stay healthy.
Assuming you are natural without any use of performance enhancing drugs, not including the football, jogging, etc... just 5 days a week in the gym is way way overkill and super duper damaging to the body. More is never better....

Unfortunately, when I was younger, I thought that leading an active lifestyle would keep me healthy and better prepared/fitter for old age.

Arthritis causes pain, swelling and stiffness in our knees. I have been coping with chronic pain in one knee for the past 3 years. I tried hydrocortisone and platelet rich plasma injections as well as massages, exercises and taking joint supplements and oral pain medication. Apart from a total knee replacement, has anyone found an effective long term cure or relief? I have seen significant improvement after 12 months of physiotherapy. However, there is still around 10 - 15% of pain when walking down the stairs, after sitting down for too long or walking too far. Perhaps the physio has only delayed the inevitable TKR.

There is no single effective cure for knee arthritis, but exercise is considered the no. one non-surgical remedy to manage pain and improve function. Regular, low-impact exercise strengthens the muscles around the knee, provides stability, reduces stiffness and helps with weight management. I am generally ok in S'pore since I drive and there are escalators and lifts everywhere. However, the cold, increased walking and absence of escalators and elevators in many foreign destinations, causes my painful knee to act up while overseas.
