I think the reason is physiological because old people's thumb are stiffer and not flexible enough...

The people who use thumbs to scroll are people who were introduced to mobile data when they were still children and their thumbs were small. They mastered the skills before they turned adults. So they are still able to use their thumbs to scroll.
