Jockey dies after bad fall at Darwin Cup

Jockey Simone Montgomerie has died after a bad fall during racing at the Darwin Cup this afternoon.

The news was confirmed at a press conference.

Montgomerie was riding Riahgrand in Race Six, when she came off in the straight.

She was treated by paramedics on the track, before she was rushed to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition.

But she later died.

The Darwin Cup race meeting has been abandoned.

A raced official with the Darwin Turf Club, Lindsay Lane, says the meeting was cancelled for the safety and well-being of the other jockeys.

A jockey has died after being thrown from her horse during a race in Darwin.

Simone Montgomerie was riding Riahgrand at the Fannie Bay Racecourse when she was thrown to the ground 100m from the finish.

She was treated by paramedics at the scene and was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital.

Darwin Turf Club has cancelled the rest of the Cup Carnival, including the Darwin Cup. The day is a public holiday in the Northern Territory.

"The stewards are somewhat concerned given the close nature of the riding community here in Darwin about the effect that it may have on the other riders so we've spoken to the riders and some of them are quite concerned and quite upset," the chief steward Lindsay Lane told News Ltd, before Montgomerie's death was confirmed.

"I'm sure that the riders can ride at their best but whether they can ride safely with the fall on their mind, the stewards aren't totally convinced. The common sense thing to do is to call the meeting off."

Darwin Turf Club donates cup prize to fund

The $200,000 prize money from the abandoned Darwin Cup will be donated to the family of jockey Simone Montgomerie who died in a race fall on Monday.

Darwin Turf Club chairman Brett Dixon announced on Tuesday the race had officially been abandoned and said the 2013 Cup would be a legacy to Montgomerie.

The Cup's sponsors CUB and Lincoln Jenkins have also donated $50,000 to the fund which has been matched by the Northern Territory government.

"The Darwin Turf Club today established the Montgomerie Fund set up at arm's length to the club at Westpac for the family of Simone and her five-year-old daughter," Dixon said.

"In memory of Simone we've decided to abandon the 2013 Darwin Cup."

Montgomerie fell in the sixth race with the rest of the Cup program abandoned after jockeys and other participants felt it inappropriate to continue.

Racing community mourns jockey Simone Montgomerie

The racing community is in mourning following the death of jockey Simone Montgomerie after a fall during a race in Darwin yesterday.

She had been leading Race 6 at the Fanny Bay racecourse aboard Riahgrand when the horse shied and threw her to the track less than 200 metres from the finish line.

She was trampled by other horses and critically injured, and died soon after arriving at the Royal Darwin Hospital.

The remainder of the meeting was called off – including the Darwin Cup.

The 26-year-old was a graduate of the apprentice academy at Cheltenham and began her riding career in South Australia before moving to Darwin in 2009.

Thoroughbred Racing South Australia (TRSA) said it is offering apprentices and jockeys counselling.

“I would say, across the board they will all feel the pain,” chairman of stewards Johan Petzer said.

“Simone was a very capable young rider and moved to Darwin to further her career, and my understanding is she did very well up there.”

The apprentice academy was closed today as a mark of respect.

Head of the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) Brenton Wilkinson described Ms Montgomerie as a ‘lovely’ person.

“The whole racing community in South Australia, if not the world – very, very close community - none of us like to see loss of life to any jockeys anywhere in the world, but to be this close to home is very emotional,” Mr Wilkinson said.

“She was just a nice person and they’re a lovely family, so our hearts and emotions go out to the whole family and her friends because it is a very, very tragic time.”
