A MAN who was facing a capital charge was given two months' jail on Thursday for hitting the victim with a plastic chair. Tan Tian Sze, 41, was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal for murdering Mr John Vettamooto, 46, with his brother, Tan Keng Huat, at the carpark of Block 89 Redhill Close on June 9. Keng Huat, 35, is at large. The court heard that the two brothers were angry after learning from another brother, Thian Chye, that he had had a fight with the victim downstairs. Thian Chye told them the victim did not say sorry after bumping into him, and even yanked off his ivory necklance during the fight. Shortly after, Thian Chye left the flat to go for a walk, and came across Mr Vettamooto. When his brothers, Tian Sze and Keng Huat came out of the lift, a fight broke out, during which Keng Huat took a knife and stabbed the victim, while Tian Sze hit him with the chair. Thectim collapsed. He was taken to hospital where he died. Tian Sze, who fled to Johor Baru with Keng Huat, was arrested on June 29 at Johor Baru checkpoint.
