My understanding is that when Morricone came out of WW2, Italy was a real shit hole and dirt poor. That is why his initial compositions for spaghetti westerns do not encompass a full orchestra. They could only afford a few musicians and that is why he started his improv group. The early westerns he did used a lot of voices, whistling, maybe one stratocaster electric guitar, etc. it was low budget. And with these limited resources, to do what he did was amazing, and in my opinion that is why he is superior to other composers. Later on when he was well known and worked in big budget productions, you can tell the difference. like in The Untouchables.

when i first heard this score, it moved me to tears too. the movie was epic but the music was exceptional.

another rendition with harmonica.

perhaps, the most morricone of them all is this....i grew up with spaghetti western films, and this score epitomized horseback riding from california to nevada to arizona to new mexico to texas in the wild wild west. considering that he lived in italy all his life and never left rome while composing music for hollywood, his imagination of quick draw gun duels, horseback riding in the wild west, and the unique landscape, vast expanse, and dry, dessert-like conditions of the southwest must be alien concepts. but not to the genius, creativity, and 6.9th sense of morricone.

Oh ya, that one is good. My fav version is Haim Goldschmidt on the Oboe
Just heard it, beautifully played indeed! The oboe is a deceptive instrument... a friend of mine who played it professionally got a hernia from the pressures required to play the oboe!

Oh wow, really. One of my profs played the Oboe for years, and he is still playing it. Seems to be ok to me. LOL

But you see Haim Goldschmidt is a big guy, maybe he weighs lifts so his body is can handle it?

Good that he won an oscars for the hateful eight. He’s like the Martin Scorsese equivalent for movie score

what about this woman with the clarinet? clarinet also requires tremendous control of the lungs and air passages.
