So, cancer rates going up, and than all of a sudden, free cancer screening offered to those turning 50 this year. What's going on? This cheapskate govt. actually offering free cancer screening? I am overwhelmed by their generousity. What about screening for those that have already turned 50? Now they are saying eating too much causes cancer? Seriously? They blame it on smoking too. Why not blame the haze and forest fires for lung cancer? It can't be good to breath it in all the time. What about the chlorine in the water and the sai chwee we have to drink? Easy to say cancer rates going up, without finding out why.

Singaporeans who are 50 this year to get free screening for 3 cancers at polyclinics

All Singaporeans who turn 50 years old this year can get free cancer screening at polyclinics for colon, breast and cervical cancer.

Announced by Health Minister Gan Kim Yong on Tuesday, the screening will be paid for by government subsidy and supplemented by the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS).

Colon and breast are the top cancers for men and women respectively.

Speaking on World Cancer Day, Mr Gan said: "For these cancers, there is good evidence that early detection through screening saves lives, because cancer, when detected and treated in the early stages, has better outcome."

Cancer cases on the rise in Singapore

Worrying trend of more lifestyle cancers like prostate, breast tumours

Cancer is on the rise in Singapore - especially those linked to bad habits associated with the modern lifestyle, including smoking and eating too much.

According to the latest available figures from two years ago, 12,123 people were diagnosed with cancer, up from 10,576 in 2008. This marks an increase of nearly 15 per cent.

One reason for these numbers, said National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) director Soo Khee Chee, is an ageing population. The NCCS is Singapore's leading cancer treatment and research centre.

"In developed countries like ours, people are living longer. Previously, people would die before they got cancer," he said.

Must be the NeWater that we are all drinking.

Also all the Ah Tiong chefs/cooks putting lots of food additives and MSG into restaurant and hawker food, I am not surprised.

i sincerely recommend that every sinkie goes thru' a cavity check. :D

I'm sure anal cancer is on the rise after being repeatedly shafted by the PAP for so many years.

Someone ask me this question..before I do a google, " is cancer, transmittable or communicable" ?? for example, someone has cancer & you spend a lot of time with that person...can cancer be spread to you? That is the question.."watson"!

Free screening is a means of market development for their hell care la.

Can. Ong Teng Cheong cancer spread to Gay Loong mah.

The impression I get is that cancer is very common in Spore. I know many who have it: neighbours, colleagues, relatives,.... The gov't must know this & the offer of "free" is actually a good business decision because it creates a demand for expensive cancer care.

Cancer rate in Sinkieland had gone up probably due to the high stress people got to face everyday at their working places ...becos they nevet know when their jobs are going to be taken over by the FTs .... :(

Question is, can cancer be spread between persons??

Viruses play a part in the development some forms of cancer and a virus can be spread from person to person.

I know at least 20 personal friends, relatives and colleagues that have cancer. In some cases, they have passed away. The youngest was in Sec 4, and the oldest was 77. This does not include public figures like Ong Teng Cheong, and Gay Loong. This cannot be right. The rate is way too high. I would think its almost an epidemic level. A truly honest govt. would bring in the CDC to investigate this phenomenon. A dishonest govt. will try and cover it up. What are the odds that 2 members of cabinet like Gay Loong and Ong Teng Cheong have the same type of cancer. In Gay Loong's case, he had lymphoma. He complained of bleeding in the asshole when shitting. They did a colonoscopy on him and found 3 small polyps. His doctor said that it was benign and did not operate right away. Only later on, they found out it was intermediate grade malignant lymphoma. Imagine, this fucker has the best doctors that money can buy in singapore, and still got misdiagnosed. I am not confident that there are enough good oncologists that can actually treat it properly in singapore, if suddenly the gates were opened to an avalanche of patients through these free screenings. Either way, whether you are treated and diagnosed properly or not, the healthcare system here is set up for them to make maximum money from you.

Singapore is not in the top 50.

This article places Singapore at number 59.

http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2011/jan/24/worldwide-cancer-rates-uk-rate-drops

If you look at the stats, you'll find that countries with the longest life expectancies will have a higher cancer rate is cancer as primarily a disease of old age caused by the fact that if you live long enough, cell division will go haywire sooner or later.

3rd world countries have low cancer rates simply because most people will die of disease or malnutrition long before they develop cance.r

Considering the fact that Singapore has an excellent life expectancy rate, the cancer rate is actually quite low.
