I'm sure anal cancer is on the rise after being repeatedly shafted by the PAP for so many years.
Why bother to check when it is better to die than to be sick ...unless you are those millionaires who can afford the 'first class' medical treatment ... :(
Sinkie, there is no need to be a millionaire to go for first class medical treatment. You just need to buy insurance and eat soursop.
Too much gambling, long hours at work, unhealthy lifestyles (low exercise, obesity, fast life, stress)- all take their toll on Singaporean's health...So, cancer rates going up, and than all of a sudden, free cancer screening offered to those turning 50 this year. What's going on? This cheapskate govt. actually offering free cancer screening? I am overwhelmed by their generousity. What about screening for those that have already turned 50? Now they are saying eating too much causes cancer? Seriously? They blame it on smoking too. Why not blame the haze and forest fires for lung cancer? It can't be good to breath it in all the time. What about the chlorine in the water and the sai chwee we have to drink? Easy to say cancer rates going up, without finding out why.
Singaporeans who are 50 this year to get free screening for 3 cancers at polyclinics
All Singaporeans who turn 50 years old this year can get free cancer screening at polyclinics for colon, breast and cervical cancer.
Announced by Health Minister Gan Kim Yong on Tuesday, the screening will be paid for by government subsidy and supplemented by the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS).
Colon and breast are the top cancers for men and women respectively.
Speaking on World Cancer Day, Mr Gan said: "For these cancers, there is good evidence that early detection through screening saves lives, because cancer, when detected and treated in the early stages, has better outcome."
Cancer cases on the rise in Singapore
Worrying trend of more lifestyle cancers like prostate, breast tumours
Cancer is on the rise in Singapore - especially those linked to bad habits associated with the modern lifestyle, including smoking and eating too much.
According to the latest available figures from two years ago, 12,123 people were diagnosed with cancer, up from 10,576 in 2008. This marks an increase of nearly 15 per cent.
One reason for these numbers, said National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) director Soo Khee Chee, is an ageing population. The NCCS is Singapore's leading cancer treatment and research centre.
"In developed countries like ours, people are living longer. Previously, people would die before they got cancer," he said.
S’poreans remain second-biggest gamblers in the world

SINGAPORE — Singaporeans are still the second-biggest gamblers in the world, but the latest statistics from a British gambling consultancy indicate that losses incurred per adult resident here have fallen from three years ago.
BY NEO CHAI CHIN - 06 FEBRUARY2014.
SINGAPORE — Singaporeans are still the second-biggest gamblers in the world, but the latest statistics from a British gambling consultancy indicate that losses incurred per adult resident here have fallen from three years ago.
The average adult resident in the Republic lost €680 (S$1,189) last year, down from €822 (worth S$1,451 at the time) in 2010, according to H2 Gambling Capital.
Almost half the amount last year was lost in casinos, with the remainder going to lotteries, non-casino gaming machines, betting and offshore gaming websites.
Last year’s numbers were published on news magazine The Economist’s website on Monday and showed Singapore ranking second behind Australia in terms of gambling losses per adult resident.
Total gambling losses incurred by Singapore, which include losses by tourists and other visitors here, amounted to S$9.9 billion.
Ten countries including the United States, China, Japan and Britain racked up bigger gambling losses, with the US coming up tops at US$119 billion (S$151.1 billion).
Explaining why Singapore ranked second for gambling losses per resident adult, H2’s founder Simon Holliday cited the highly legalised and regulated industry here as a factor, in addition to the relatively high propensity to gamble and easy access to most forms of gambling.
“I’d think there are much higher rates of gambling in other Asian countries but it’s not regulated. This is why Singapore comes out high on this list,” he told TODAY.
“Singapore is probably the only Asian country where you actually get a realistic assessment of what people are actually gambling on.”
When tourists and visitors’ gambling losses are taken into account, the losses incurred per adult here is S$1,964, said Mr Holliday.
H2’s numbers are derived from sources including public results of the two casino operators here, as well as websites that permit Singaporeans to bet.

Must be the NeWater that we are all drinking.
Also all the Ah Tiong chefs/cooks putting lots of food additives and MSG into restaurant and hawker food, I am not surprised.

If you look at the stats, you'll find that countries with the longest life expectancies will have a higher cancer rate is cancer as primarily a disease of old age caused by the fact that if you live long enough, cell division will go haywire sooner or later.
3rd world countries have low cancer rates simply because most people will die of disease or malnutrition long before they develop cance.r
Considering the fact that Singapore has an excellent life expectancy rate, the cancer rate is actually quite low.
I know at least 20 personal friends, relatives and colleagues that have cancer. ......

Japan has highest life expectancy but a very low rate.
