In Singapore, the difference is that the mainstream media is very supportive of the leaders, unlike in Western democracies where the newspapers jibe and make cartoons of them whenever they can and make jokes of the politicians commonly. Here, the Straits Times is more inclined to "porlumpar" than try to make fun of them.

LKY was then still hanging loose and riding high in the country when you were in sec school. The pappies porlumpars were too efficient in their spread of rumours about votes being not secret and anti-pappies voters would be punished.

Beginning in 2011, it is no longer possible to use same strategy of getting votes by the pappies. GE 2015 is another slide for the pappies. George Y got booted out, other pappies to follow soon.

That's why you have elections.

But the key difference is, in other (First World) countries, the power relations between the incumbent and opposition are fairly equal. You don't have a situation where one party has ruled for 50 years, polls only 60% of the vote but gets 93% of the legislature, and bankrupts or detains its political dissidents/critics.
