Like it or not the Singapore of today is a one-party state.

The PAP government claims that they know what is best for all Singaporeans. That Singapore does not need a robust opposition to ensure checks and balances are kept for good goverance.

The PAP further claims that Singapore cannot survive without it. Will there be riots and chaos if more opposition members are voted into parliament?

Lets discuss.

PAP win election in 1968 is because:-

1) Win new Indian Devan Nair votes
2) Win new Chinese Goh Keng Swee Votes
3) Win new Singapore UMNO Jump Ship Votes
4) Southern Vietnam war remind Barisan Socilist member to support PAP to prevent religion exˈtremist and racial communist from the north Singapore.
5) PRC had been control by Communist, no way for Chinese to back to Mainland China. They need to defend Singapore.

Singapore very first GE for Parliament saw the longest campaigning period ever in Singapore history but also the shortest time Parliament was convened after a GE. Following the resignations of 11 BS Members of Parliament and exodus of two BS MPs from Singapore to escape the Internal Security Department, the legislature was left with only PAP MPs. BS boycotted the GE on the grounds that Singapore's independence was "phoney" and several opposition parties heeded its call.

The chiefs of PKMS (former UMNO), Ahmad Haji Taff, and SCP (former MCA), Chng Boon Eng, turned up but did not file their nominations. Due to this, three precedents were set - the least number of seats contested in a GE, the first time PAP was returned to power on nomination day and the first time it won all seats to return a pure one-party legislature. Henceforth, walkovers became a perpetual feature in every succeeding GE.

1st Parliament dissolution: 8 February 1968 [Thu]
Nomination day: 17 February 1968 [Sat]
Polling day: 13 April 1968 [Sat]
2nd Parliament convention: 6 May 1968 [Mon]

Eligible voters: 759,367
Voters in walkover constituencies: 674,484 (88.8%)
Total voters: 84,883 (11.2%)
Total voter turnout: 77,952 (91.8%)

2012 - 1968 = 44 years ago. plus 21 years old. The youngest voter age is 65 years old.

In 2012, people who below 65 years are new voter who never fear with North Communist are 90% votes.

Can PAP still win. Unless they attack Malaysia to create tension.

is a one shopping mall, 1 supermarket, 1 food store, 1 cell phone operator, 1 bank and etc... good for you???

it only represents monopoly and controlled prices where and the possiblity of bad service....

anything without any competition is no good....people dont get threaten to work hard

If UMNO Malaysia unable to leader Barisan National. PAP no longer important for non Muslim Singapore.

If PAS and PKR can handle Malaysia Federal Union Affair fairly and give freedom to all member states, PAP one party system no longer a myths but out dated system.

During 2006, all contested GRC and SMC. Only Potong Pasir BN(SDA) and Hougang BS(WP), opposition win.

This is the fact

Chng Boon Eng family shall support NSP. So NSP can win more GRC and SMC.

You want it to be a communist state like China and North Korea?

Sure, PAP won in '68 through the propagation of the fear of communism. But in 2010?

Singapore is a totally different society today. What are Singaporeans afraid of ? The unknown?

PAP win election in 1968 is because:-.

During 1968, the first, second and third generation new comer or sinkek, worry UMNO Malaysia cut the male/female one part be a muslim and force them become baba who speak malay and english.

Political change on one party system is very hard. We wish new generation that under stand malay muslim and the independent of Singapore with strong NS Chinese Race army will vote for opposition like RP and SDP.

That's what I don't understand about Singaporeans! How could they allow a monopoly to survive for 50 years!

Monopoly is never good.

Monopoly breeds contempt, is expensive to run and totally inefficient.

Lets look at the world around us. Which one party state has been good for its people in the long run?

North Korea, Albania, China?

The opposition is only able to win a few token seats because it is an unlevel playing field.

It is hard to contest against the PAP when the goal posts keep on changing with gerrymandering, GRCs, high deposits to contest, etc.

Good opposition members are jailed, sued to bankruptcy or run out of town!

Control high post vacancy, control very professional vacancy, increase minimum election cost, increase GRC racial tension between Chinese, Malay, Indian and others and others control is learnt from White KMT Chiang Kai Sek.

when i was a kid, i felt totally singaporean. i was never afraid of the malays and indians. they were my fellow countrymen!

this is another fear propagated by the PAP to keep the population under its control.
