Netanyahu described Iran's animosity toward Trump as deeply rooted in his aggressive Middle East policies, including the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and the targeted drone strike on General Soleimani in 2020.

Netanyahu suggested that the regime in Tehran saw Trump as the biggest obstacle to its nuclear ambitions and had taken concrete steps to eliminate him, aligning his remarks with recent U.S. criminal investigations.

The Facts

Netanyahu's public statement reflects findings already documented by U.S. authorities.

In November 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice unsealed an indictment charging Farhad Shakeri, believed to be operating on behalf of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), with plotting to assassinate Trump.

Prosecutors allege that Shakeri, while in Tehran, conducted multiple interviews with the FBI in which he admitted being tasked with surveilling and killing Trump in the months before the 2024 presidential election.

The criminal complaint states that Shakeri was instructed by a senior IRGC official in September 2024 to prioritize the Trump plot over other assignments. When Shakeri raised concerns about the cost, he was reportedly told: "We have already spent a lot of money," indicating that the regime was willing to finance a continued effort to assassinate Trump.
