Iran Is Ready To Attack Israel

By Dr. Majid Rafizadeh

  • 1.8k

The tension between Israel and Iran appears to be heightening. Hossein Salami, deputy commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), recently said: “Hezbollah has 100,000 missiles that are ready to hit Israel to liberate the occupied Palestinian territories if the Zionist regime repeats its past mistakes.”

He added: “Today, the grounds for the annihilation and collapse of the Zionist regime are [present] more than ever.” Salami warned that if Israel made the “wrong move,” it would come under attack.

A few weeks ago, a senior adviser to the IRGC’s elite Quds Force, Ahmad Karimpour, said Iran could destroy Israel “in less than eight minutes” if Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei gave the order.

Rhetoric and Iran’s Military Capabilities

There are several reasons why Iran’s repeated anti-Israel statements may be pure rhetoric. They are most likely meant as a type of psychological warfare, because Iran cannot afford direct conflict with Israel.

Although Iran is larger geographically and in terms of population, its military capacity is inferior. Even regarding missile capabilities, which Iranian generals boast about, Israel’s are greater in range and number.

What fundamentally changes the balance of power is Israel’s nuclear capacity. It is widely believed to have some 200 nuclear warheads that can be used with intercontinental ballistic missiles, as well as nuclear-armed submarines.

As such, Iran’s policy toward Israel is to not strike first, as doing so would be suicidal for the ruling political establishment, whose main objective is to maintain power. It would be more effective to fight Israel via its Lebanese Shiite proxy Hezbollah.

Tehran’s repeated boasting about IRGC capabilities is aimed at invoking nationalist sentiment among the public, because Iranian leaders know that the overwhelming majority of Iranians are dissatisfied with the hardliners and the political establishment.

Kazem, 29, PhD student majored in public health, pointed out “I would like to see a regime change in Iran, but I want Iran, ruled by any government even the current clergies, to be stronger than any country in the region including Israel. Iran should be the most powerful nation in the region militarily, technologically and economically as it was under Shah era or thousands of years of the Persian empire”.

In addition, IRGC attempts to maintain and increase the budget allocated to it by showing that it is an indispensable and a must-have force to protect Iranians.

This method has been successful, as polls have repeatedly shown that many Iranians who oppose the political establishment still favor their country becoming a nuclear power or being more powerful than any other country in the region.

Finally, Khamenei and senior cadre of IRGC are appealing to the nationalistic sentiments of Iranians to win their votes by showing that IRGC is a must-have force to protect Iranians and project Iran’s prowess. They are also recalibrating the domestic balance of power, making it clear that they are the final decision-makers. They are appealing to their hardline social base by showing it that they continue to prioritize the values of the 1979 revolution (such as opposing Israel and the US) over other issues, including national interests. And, they are sending a message that the nuclear agreement does not mean Iran would make fundamental changes in its socio-political and socio-economic policies.

Iranian state television on Sunday aired what it described as the confessions of an Iranian academic with Swedish residency who it said had provided information to Israel to help it assassinate several senior nuclear scientists, Reuters reported.

The academic’s wife, speaking by telephone from Stockholm, said he had been forced by his interrogators to read the confession.

Iran’s Supreme Court last week upheld a death sentence against Ahmadreza Djalali, a doctor and lecturer at the Stockholm-based Karolinska Institute.

Djalali was arrested in Iran in April 2016 and later convicted of espionage and sentenced to death. He denied the charges.

In Sunday’s television report, according to Reuters, Djalali was linked to the assassination of four Iranian scientists between 2010 and 2012 that Tehran said was an Israeli attempt to sabotage its nuclear energy program.

Djalali said in the report that he had given the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad information about key nuclear scientists.

”They were showing me pictures of some people or satellite photos of nuclear facilities and were asking me to give them information about that,” Djalali said in the television report.

Vida Mehrannia, Djalali’s wife, said her husband had been forced to read a pre-agreed confession in front of the camera.

“After three months in solitary confinement, his interrogators told him that he would be released only if he reads from a text in front of the camera,” she told Reuters by telephone from Stockholm.

“My husband told me that they shouted at him each time he was saying something different from the text and stopped the filming,” Mehrannia added.

The film said Djalali had agreed to cooperate with Israel in return for money and residency of a European country.

The film also contained interviews with Majid Jamali Fashi, an Iranian athlete who was hanged in 2012 over the killings of the nuclear scientists. Djalali is the second person found guilty in the same case.

The Islamic Republic, which is notorious for its executions, has in the past executed individuals it claimed to be “spies” for both Israel and the U.S.

In June of 2012, Iran claimed to have dismantled a terrorist and sabotage network in the southern city of Shiraz, which allegedly planned bombings and assassination attempts during Iran’s presidential election.

The network had links with the CIA, Israel and some neighboring Arab nations, Iran claimed.

In a previous incident, Iran executed Majid Jamali Fashi after convicting him of spying for the Mossad and of playing a key role in the January 2010 assassination of a top nuclear scientist in return for payment of $120,000.

Iran Says Arabs and Muslims Must Defend Jerusalem as Rockets Target Israel
By Tom O'Connor On 12/7/17 at 5:13 PM

World Iran Israel Arab-Israeli Conflict Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Donald Trump Jerusalem Trump Jerusalem Speech Hamas Hezbollah Qassem Soleimani Quds Force
Iran called on countries worldwide to stand up against Israel's claim to Jerusalem after President Donald Trump declared the disputed city capital of the majority-Jewish state, a move met with widespread protests and violence in the region.

The Iranian military's chief of staff, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, said Thursday that Arab and Muslim nations faced "a historical and decisive test" in their response to Trump's decision Wednesday regarding Jerusalem, a city religiously significant to Jews, Christians and Muslims and claimed by both Israelis and Palestinians. Iran, a revolutionary Shiite Muslim power, has long opposed Israel's de facto control over the holy city, and threatened to respond to the recent move with force.

"The world of arrogance, and foremost the criminal U.S., should know that the unity of the Muslim world will obstruct this desperate move, and this measure will be defeated with the vigilance of the Muslim world while the Zionist regime will move closer to its annihilation," Bagheri said, according to Iran's semiofficial Press TV.

“Israel has occupied the Palestinian territory, and the continuation of the Palestinian people’s struggle against this cancerous tumor [Israel] indicates that the occupiers will never see peace and will have no choice but to leave the land or to perish,” Deputy Chief of Staff Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri added, according to Tasnim News Agency, another semiofficial outlet.

The U.S. has been Israel's foremost international sponsor since the country's 1948 creation, which led to great conflict with its Arab neighbors and the mass exodus of Palestinians. Since then, Arab countries and militant groups have continually clashed with Israel. In recent decades, Iran has become a leading state sponsor of efforts to undermine Israeli interests in the region.

Iran's growing military power has given it an unprecedented reach across the Middle East. It has its own expeditionary force, a branch of the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps known as the Quds Force. The secretive unit, headed by famed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, has conducted operations across Iraq and Syria and has been charged with maintaining a network as far-reaching as South America. CIA Director Mike Pompeo even admitted to contacting Soleimani Saturday, ahead of Trump's announcement, in a failed bid to protect U.S. interests in the region.

Iran vied to expand its sphere of influence at the expense of its main rival, U.S.-aligned Sunni Muslim kingdom Saudi Arabia, and increased support for its allied militias, which also responded to the Jerusalem move. Hassan Nasrallah, head of the Iran-backed Lebanese Shiite Muslim movement Hezbollah, said Thursday he did not expect Arab nations to cut ties to the U.S. altogether, but said they should at least stop normalizing relations with Israel.

"Trump doesn’t listen to anyone. He doesn’t respect anyone, neither his allies, nor the international community," Nasrallah said, according to Lebanon's Hezbollah-affiliated Al Manar. "Trump knows that his decision to give Jerusalem to an artificial state represents an insult to millions of Muslim and Christian people."

Nasrallah called on Palestinians to stage a new intifada, an Arabic word describing violent uprisings against Israel in the late 1980s and early 2000s. That call was echoed by another Iran-backed faction: Palestinian Sunni Muslim movement Hamas, which controlled the Gaza Strip and maintains an oft-troubled relationship with its revolutionary left-wing political rival, Fatah, which administered the West Bank.

Unknown factions fired up to three rockets from Gaza toward Israel after the Jerusalem announcement, resulting in no known injuries, according to Reuters. In response, Israel reportedly launched attacks using tanks and warplanes.

Ahead of Israel's establishment in 1948, Jerusalem was given international status by the U.N., but was later split between Israel and Jordan after subsequent conflict. After another war in 1967, Israel established de facto control over the entire city, allowing Jordan only civil administration of Islamic holy sites such as the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock.
