iphone_2012_media_invite.jpg

The Loop reports that Apple has just sent out invitations for a media event scheduled for next week Wednesday, September 12. The event will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM Pacific / 1:00 PM Eastern. The tagline on the invitation is simply "It's almost here."

Apple is of course expected to introduce the next-generation iPhone and give a final preview of iOS 6 at the event. Apple's "iPad mini" is reportedly also nearing a launch, but sources have indicated that Apple is planning a second media event for October to introduce that product. Apple's iPod lineup is also rumored to be seeing an update at one of the two events, while rumored iMac updates and the launch of a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro are likely to appear separately.

There's clearly a "5" in the shadow of the invitation, suggesting that Apple's next iPhone will indeed be called the iPhone 5.

While photos of the iPhone 5 battery have leaked several times in recent weeks, repair firm iResQ has now obtained one of the batteries and posted new photos showing the battery in the iPhone's rear shell and next to an iPhone 4S battery for comparison.

As previously seen, the iPhone 5 battery runs at 3.8 volts, potentially using new chemistry to boost capacity to 5.45 watt-hours from the 3.7-volt 5.30 watt-hour battery used in the iPhone 4S. The comparison photos show that the new battery is slightly taller than the iPhone 4S battery, and the thickness appears roughly the same despite the fact that the new iPhone is expected to be at least 15% thinner than the iPhone 4S.

Key differences between the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4S battery:

1. The iPhone 5's battery is slightly less than a half an inch taller than the iPhone 4S. The thickness appears to be identical.

2. The iPhone 5 is 3.8V/5.45Whr while the iPhone 4S is 3.7V/5.3Whr.

3. The connector on the iPhone 5 is not only different, it is placed on the opposite side of the battery to accomodiate its new position within the iPhone.

Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 5 at next week's media event that was officially announced today.

iphone-ticker.de reports [Google translation] that T-Mobile Germany has begun distributing nano-SIM cards to its retailers, likely signifying preparations for the next-generation iPhone launch as the forthcoming device is so far the only one thought to use the smaller Apple-backed standard approved earlier this year.

According to the report, materials included with the shipment indicate that the nano-SIMs are to be used to for the "latest generation of smartphones" that will be arriving on the market in the near future.

European carriers were reported in July as having been stockpiling supplies of the new nano-SIMs amid expectations of high demand for the next iPhone and past experience with card shortages when Apple transitioned to the micro-SIM standard for the iPhone 4. At the time, carriers were also said to be testing the new nano-SIMs in partnership with Apple.

Staying at the same price as the iPhone 4S, the iPhone costs $199 for the 16GB version, $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB. Pre-orders start on Friday 14th, with the phone shipping on September 21st in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. 20 more countries will follow next month.

Rising out of the ground of the Apple event stage like an Indiana Jones treasure, it's the most feature-rich iOS device to date. Made entirely of glass and aluminium, it is the thinnest and lightest iPhone ever, measuring 7.6mm thick and weighing 112 grams, making it 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S. As per usual, it'll be available in two colours too, either black or white, though the rear panels will be different on each. The white version has a raw aluminium back plate, while the black version has an anodised black finish on its rear.

A Retina display with 326ppi again features, in a 4-inch screen of the usual width, but taller than previous iPhones. Resolution of the display sits at 1136 x 640. Closer to a 16:9 ratio than before, the iPhone 5 is now better for viewing films on, with 44% better colour saturation, with touch integrated into the display to reduce glare in sunlight.

Everything now runs off the new A6 chip, which Apple claim is 2 times faster than the A5 for both CPU and GPU processing. 22% smaller and more energy efficient than the previous chip, apps can now load as much as 2x faster. Console-quality graphics will be possible, according to EA's Rob Murray, who demoed the Real Racing 3 app game on the new iPhone 5.

iOS 6 is the onboard operating system, which adds another row of apps on each homescreen, thanks to the longer screen, making for five app rows, plus the app dock on the bottom. It also introduces Apple's own Maps app to the iPhone as a native, first party app for the first time. It uses Yelp data for local amenities, and includes Siri integration for voice control, and includes 3D imagery and satellite imagery too. The Safari browser gets an update too, allowing for a fullscreen view and shared tabs from iPad and Mac versions of the browser through the iCloud service. Passbook, letting you use your iPhone as a ticketing system, including airline flights, was also demoed. iTunes too gets a major revamp, with more ways to buy and streamlined track viewing and playback options.

All first party apps have been optimised for the new longer display to show more information too. Calendar, for instance, now shows a full five-day working week. Old apps, however, run in letterbox view with black borders either side of the display, rather than stretched to fit. This keeps everything pinsharp at a natural resolution, but may frustrate some users. Hopefully app developers will put the time in to offer iPhone 5 optimised versions too.

Camera capabilities are also improved. It's still an 8MP backside illuminated sensor as with the iPhone 4S, but now with a dynamic low-light mode for better night time shooting to add to the 5-element lens and f/2.4 aperture. There's also a panorama shooting mode natively built into the camera app for the first time, with a 360-degree shot resulting in a giant 28 megapixel image. The A6 chip allows for faster photo capture too, as well as a smart filter for better colour matching and reduced noise. Share Photo Streams allow you to share photos with pals, and receive messages on your snaps too.

Video capture remains at 1080p, with improved video stabilisation and facial recognition added. The front facing camera also jumps to 720p, which makes for sharper FaceTime calls, which can now be made over cellular networks too, as well as Wi-Fi.

Calls themselves should be slightly clearer too, thanks to three mice situated on the front, bottom and back of the device. These should all help with noise cancellation and voice recognition with apps like Siri.

As expected, the connector for the phone changes for the first time in the iPhone's history, dropping the nine-year old connector that first shipped with the iPod. A new "Lightning" connector is now introduced, that's 80% smaller, helping to keep the overall design smaller, as well as offering faster data transfers, and is "reversible", meaning it can be plugged in when either facing the front or back. Accessories for connecting to devices with the old-style dock connector will also be available.

"Ultrafast Wireless" connectivity means that LTE 4G speeds are available to the new iPhone 5, while EDGE, HSPA, HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA are all also compatible. LTE carriers include the newly announced EE 4G network in the UK, and Sprint, AT&T and Verizon in the USA. Wi-Fi connectivity comes courtesy of 802.11a/b/g/n, dual channel to 150mbps.

Even with LTE connectivity, 225 hours of battery life on standby are quoted, with 8 hours 3G or LTE talk time, and 10 hours Wi-Fi usage.

NANO SIM, that means apple change from normal SIM 2 years ago and now another new one, call nano sim.

BOOooooo...................... DIE APPLE DIE.

Nano+sim

iPhone 5 features and spec: A nano SIM, new earphones and a Lightning port

With the Apple announcement and launch just a few hours away, a picture taken down from Vodafone's website has cranked up the rumour mill another notch
Is the iPhone Sim about to get smaller? Is the iPhone Sim about to get smaller?

We’ve heard rumours of the iPhone 5 sporting a nano SIM slot but none have been confirmed – until now.

Vodafone UK has confirmed a stockpile of 500,000 nano SIMs, ready for use in the iPhone 5.

The firm posted an image (not the one above) of the SIM on its official blog but later pulled it down.

The nano SIM is 40 per cent smaller than the tiny micro-SIM currently used in the likes of the iPhone 4S and Samsung’s Galaxy S3.

The tiny new card measures in at 12.3mm x 8.8mm and, according to Vodafone, is "so slim and tiny you might only be able to handle them with tweezers".

The smaller SIM means there’s more room for internal specifications.

There have also been rumours that a new 'Lightning port' will feature, as well as new advanced earphones called 'EarPods'.

Fingerprint security and a possible music streaming service are among other rumoured new iPhone features .

It is also expected to have 4G and iOS 6 in what some are touting as the biggest electronics upgrade in consumer history. [/IMG]

It has been a long wait - but Apple has now unveiled the iPhone 5.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, talking on the stage in San Francisco and beamed live to London, took to the stage to announce: 'We've got some really cool stuff to show you, it’s an extraordinary time at Apple.'

The latest version of the iconic smartphone comes with a four-inch screen, an eight-megapixel camera which can take 28-megapixel panoramic shots, and is the thinnest iPhone yet, at just 7.6mm.

All of which comes, for the first time, in a package made entirely in glass and aluminium.

Apple confirmed the phone, available in black and white, has a four-inch display, - 1136x640 - which is the same width as previous models but taller.

Apple has also redesigned the iconic white headphones shipped with its products.

‘We’ve shipped over 600 million sets of headphones,’ said Greg Joswiak of Apple.

‘We’ve spent three years in designing an entirely new headphones - EarPods’.‘

'We 3D scanned hundreds of ears, and looked for a commonality,’ said Sir Jonathan Ive.

‘The shape of the EarPod is defined by the shape of the ear.’

It uses a new display which is 30 per cent thinner that previous handsets.

Schiller, vice president of marketing, said: 'It is designed to fit in the hand, and all of our software is being updated to take advantage of this display.'

The handset also has a new chip, the Apple A6, which is twice as fast as previous versions but 22% smaller.

The iPhone is expected to be the biggest selling in Apple’s history, with an estimated 8m set to be sold according to some estimates.

The battle for domination of the mobile market has become increasingly heated recently with Apple's competitors taking it on with a series of new products.

The firm boasted the new handset has eight hours of 3G talk time, and a 225 hour standby time.

It also has an eight megapixel camera with a 3264x2448 sensor, and has improved its performance in low light, and a lens made from sapphire crystal.

The handset also now has a panorama mode to create wide shots. ‘The ocean looks bluer, kids look happier,’ joked Schiller.

Apple also revealed a redesign of its iTunes music store.

'Apple loves creating music products, it is embedded in our DNA,' said Tim Cook.

'Today we are announcing some exciting changes to iPod and iTunes.'

'The iTunes store in the number one in the world,' said Eddy Cue of Apple.

'More than 2/3rd of our downloads come from iOS devices, so we have spent a year redesigning the store from them.'

Schiller also confirmed the handset has a controversial new connector.

‘The iPhone from its start used the 30 pin connector, and it has served us well. A lot has changed and it is time for the connector to evolve - and out new connector is called Lightning.’

Apple also showed off a connector allowing people to use their existing chargers and accessories.

The handset will use iOS 6, and dumps Google’s maps for Apple’s own.

‘We’ve built in free turn by turn directions,’ said Scott Forstall of Apple as he demonstrated the new Apple Maps app.

‘We use a cinematic camera angle to fly you around corners.'

The firm also showed off a 3D flyover feature allowing people to virtually fly over an area, and showed off the software 'flying' over Big Ben in London.

A new app called Passbook also allows people to collect store cards, tickets and other information in a single app.

It can be used to show boarding passes on planes and for entry to concerts and sports games that support the codes.
iPOD ALSO GETS A REFRESH

Apple also revealed a new range of its iPod music players.

‘The iPod touch is the world’s most popular music player, and the world’s most popular games player,’ said Greg Joswiak of Apple.

The new iPod touch has a 4inch screen similar to the iPhone, and is 6.1mm thin, weighing 88 grams.

The new Nano, which resembles a tiny iPhone, is 5mm thin, and is available in seven colours and also has Apple’s new lightning connector.

Users can also share photo albums easily, and Apple’s speech recognition software Siri has been updated to give people sports scores, and even book restaurants.

Facebook has also been integrated into the service, allowing people to update their status via speech.

Sir Jonathan Ive said: ‘When you think about your iPhone, its the product you have with you all the time - we take changing it really seriously.

‘We want to make a much better phone. What makes iPhone 5 so unique if how it feels in your hand.
Apple also gave a glimpse of the manufacturing behind the iPhone.

‘We use crystalline diamond to polish the handset,’ revealed Sir Jonathan.

‘The variance between products we measure in microns’

The handset will cost the same price as the iPhone 4S, $199 to $399 depending on size.

It will begin shipping on September 21st in US, Canada and several other countries, and customers can pre-order from this Friday.

It may have a slightly larger screen and thinner shape but my initial thoughts are that it is (functionally) not that different from a 4S.
The new Adaptor port and nano sim card are additional hassles I could do without. For the first time, I'm actually considering an Android for my next phone.

No doubt Apple fans will buy it in their droves but I for one am not impressed.

The new Apple iPhone 5 is 18 per cent thinner and 20 per cent lighter than the 4S but runs twice as fast, with graphics that are twice as fast, thanks to a new processor.
