Indian navy officer killed in another navy accident at destroyer in Mumbai

NEW DELHI, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Indian Navy was hit by yet another mishap and the second in 10 days Friday when a commander- rank officer was killed in an accident at the engine room of an under-construction destroyer at the Mumbai dockyard, said local media.
The incident too place with a gas leakage on the destroyer under trial testing in Mazagaon Dock Limited in Mumbai. Some officers were hospitalized after the incident, said Press Trust of India.
INS Kolkata-class destroyer ship Yard-701, which is being built by the MDL, suffered malfunction in its carbon dioxide unit while undergoing machinery trials, leading to gas leakage, the report quoted sources as saying.
The valve on top of the cardon-dioxide cylinder burst, hitting the officer on his chest, and he collapsed. The leaking CO2 would have further added to the confusion, said the TV channel Times Now.
INS Kolkata is the most modern destroyer of India, set for commissioning in a few weeks.
The accident took place days after Admiral D.K. Joshi resigned as navy chief due to a spate of navy accidents involving submarines and other warships in recent months, officials said.
Two officers were killed Wednesday last week when submarine the INS Sindhuratna caught fire during a test at sea.
Last August, 18 sailors died in one of the Indian navy's worst disasters in Mumbai when another submarine exploded presumably due to mistakes made when installing missiles.
