Attorney Dana Sussman said Thursday the housekeeper worked long hours for little pay for Dr Devyani Khobragade, India's deputy consul general in New York.

She eventually left the home and sought help from the Indian community in New York. She was pointed to a nonprofit that has an anti-trafficking program, where she met Ms Sussman. Together, they went to the State Department.

Dr Khobragade was then investigated and arrested.
