Immediate 20% increase in tobacco excise duty across all tobacco products: Budget 2026

5 cents?? wa super cheap must have been super long liao... my time I think was like $0.10, $0.20 or something per stick at mama shop.... too long liao can't remember....

Reminds moi smoking this when it first started here in Sinkieland during moi Secondary School days .... small packet only 90cents from Mama store back then .... cheapest menthol after the 7 sticks box Consulate ...

Yes, and Hacks sweets were selling at three for 10 cents, and a regular pack of Calbee potato chips was priced at 50 cents.

According to this link, a 1.5kg pack has about 400 sweets.

https://www.comoffice.sg/PP413

This regular pack weighs 130g, so approx 35 sweets per pack.

https://www.fairprice.com.sg/product/227985

Listed price is $2.52. Each sweet costs about 70 cents.

3.3 cents per sweet in the 1980s, to 70 cents per sweet today. Welcome to inflation.
Yes I remember last time hacks sweets was $0.10 for 3 pcs in the 1980's. If we adjust that $0.10 using a 3% discount rate over 40 years to reflect the price it should be today, it should be $0.32 for 3 pcs of hack sweets.

$0.70 is like more than double of the prices paid back in 1980's. Yes things are more than double more expensive adjusted to inflation. The cost of living goes up = the standard of living goes down. Many boomers take morbid pride that our country's cost of living is high because most don't understand the illusion of money.

I be pity Malay community. They have been taken for a ride and yet they continue to vote for pap

Malay community is generally low income earners and most of them smoke and pay for high cigarette tax to government and yet they form the biggest pap vote bank

Increasing tobacco taxes is a practical move in Singapore, it helps deter smoking, especially among youths, and supports our push for a healthier nation.

U know now Australia tobacco market dominated by contraband cigarettes because of the high taxes. Politicians never learn from usa prohibition era.

KNN today go buy 1 pack of cigarettes $18.20. Wahhh.... sibei ex sia.... probably the last pack I will ever buy here liao.... switching to "water goods" or vape is better....

Rather than to KPKB, perhaps both Singaporeans and the Elected govt should take a step back, chill and consider its actions AS WELL as the consequences of the long already steep rises on cigarettes.

It is on a moral high horse to save the young from nicotine addiction, but many above the age of 30 years old had LONG been addicted to nicotine, as there were NO govt initiatives on stemming addiction back then, but HAD even govt support for tobacco firms to support and fund mainstream events,

Nicotine DOES harm in the long run, but most will only experienced it when they are long dead. There are far more harmful chemicals that causes cancer in daily lives, such as carbon monoxide from heavy traffic in densely populated areas and in industrial zones, whereby even if one is not a smoker, or secondary inhaler of carcinogenic burning smells, cancer develops.

Back when COV identified as 19, govts shut down and in placed draconian measures to save the elderly, the ones whom had contributed and made Singapore to what it is today, those measures were accepted by the young out of respect.

Now when it is time to save the young, DRACONIAN measures are in placed upon the elderly, mostly retirees, and often, have little chance to earn a higher living salary, thanks to foreign talents taking over jobs.....

When one of our great founding fathers wanted to end prostitution, to save womanhood, the wise, great and late pragmatic Mr, LKY decided not to do so , as it will only lead to FAR MORE dangerous underground illegal sexual activities and eventually FAR MORE COSTS to taxpayers and social anger in enforcement, as many Humankind seems to have little control over long sexual needs since ancient times....and thus he chose to REGULATE it, within safe zones and better and equal education. and opportunities of life for the back then new generation of Singapore women.

EQUALLY, for those above 30s, whom had long been addicted to nicotine, it will be difficult to go COLD TURKEY over a substance that had long proven to do no present harm to Humankind, but in effect, had calmed down emotional driven Human beings thru self disciplined breathing exercises....

It is a DELICATE BALANCE, to save BOTH the young and the old, thus INNOVATIVE ways and solutions are needed, rather than using a chopper knife, as one of our great founding father, the late Mr, LKY, had realized.......
